Girl Genius Goes Webcomic

I dropped Girl Genius several years ago, as there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the schedule. First Bi-monthly, then quarterly, then whenever-we-manage-to-get-an-issue-out. If they can't even manage to get an issue out every 3 months, how often is the web comic actually going to be updated? They may start off with 3 pages a week, but I'd be surprised if that lasts very long...

Who cares what the schedule is if it's a good story? I'm still picking up A Distant Soil after 20 years and 3 different incarnations of the series (WARP, Starblaze and 3 different publishers). Phil's stuff as far as I'm concerned is pure genius.

That depends upon their commitments and personal schedules. For some folks, putting out a slow steady stream of material is simpler and easier than getting the same sized collection of material together on a single deadline.

Or, to look at it another way - as a periodical, each issue was a single major project that generally had to be worked into their production schedule as a unit. If other projects took precedence, or if there were other production difficulties, then the whole issue got pushed back. As a webcomic, the artwork can be done as it fits into their schedules. If there's a delay, it may be on an update or two rather than on an entire issue's worth of content.

I can wait for a good story. It was the constant solicitation, delay, cancellation cycle that really pissed me off. I don't mind waiting if I know that it's 3 months, 6 months, or a year between installments. It's when we're told "Really, we'll have one out next month! Go pre-order it!" and I do so, then nothing comes out the next month or even in the four months after that. I'll just wait for the colleceted issues later and read them all at once, thanks. Every time an issue came out I had to go read the previous 2-3 issues to remember what was happening in the story.

Sure, it is good stuff, and I enjoy it. I just felt like I was being jerked around by the lack of any sort of schedule, and after a while I just said forget it. I'll get it later.
