Give me your virtual tabletop xp

Hussar - do you use a voice service like Skype or TeamSpeak?

I'd like to know if it's easier running a game with out without conference call? On the one hand, it beats the speed of typing all the time, but does everyone talking drag combat and other activities out like F2F gaming?

Has anyone tried using Ventrilo (VOIP), perhaps in conjunction with Open RPG or some other virtual tabletop?

That might cut down on the amount of typing needed but still benefit from the useful mechanics of online play.

One thing I liked about Open RPG was that you could save the chat log, which made for really easy journals/recaps!

A couple of my players are allergic to the idea of using VOIP in the game. So, we type. Fortunately, we're all fairly quick typers, so that hasn't been a problem.

One really sweet thing, while I'm on the typing bit, is that you can simply pretype boxed text and the like and send it to the chat window all at once. That can dramatically speed up play as well.

On a side note about the lack of conviction from players. This is probably my number one pet peeve. I've had more than a few players over the years disappear into the ether. Drives me absolutely wild. It's an unfortunate side effect of gaming with strangers. It would be fine if it was after a session or two, but, I've had people vanish six months into a campaign. Bloody annoying.

It takes some time to build up a group that is as dedicated to the campaign as you are. On the plus side, if someone's a prat, boot them without hesitation. You can always get new players. I no longer game with people I only tolerate, like I did back in the "play at the FLGS days". Now, when someone truly isn't meshing, they get a firmly and politely worded email telling them that they are no longer welcome at the table.

I find using Skype with our VT speeds things up a lot. It is so much faster to just be able to say what is happening or for someone to ask a question then wait for them to type it out.

With typing, the game somewhat slows down to the speed of the slowest typer.

My guys still type some in character stuff into the game but 95% of everything is done in voice.

I don't find that extra chatter slows the game down once things start to happen.

Would on of the openRPG affectionatoes care to AIM or Yim me, and walk me through opening a room with a pretend player? I like the looks of it, but if I can't make it work I can't make it work. :\

Do you have the problem of everyone speaking at once?

Or when one person starts speaking, does it block the voices of everyone else?

No more so then when sitting around a table. Sometimes more then one person starts to talk but one will stop and the other keep going/start again.

This is one reason I like Skype better... the lag is much better (for us) with Skype then Team Speak. With Skype its like talking on a phone. With TS there was a 5 or so second delay between when you started talking and when the others would hear it.

Its still easier and faster to deal with this then to have 6 people all typing questions at the same time and you trying to type answers back to each one... and each answer generating more questions...

Kahuna, I'm heading to bed very shortly, so, I can't right now. But, if you go onto Open and take a look in some of the populated rooms, and post a polite request, frequently someone will help you.

One problem I used to have with hosting servers was because I was behind some sort of firewall.

I have been running a campaign in FG for about two years. The older version of FG was prone to oddball crashes and lockups for me, which delayed the games significantly. Fantasy Grounds 2 however is significantly better and has some really nice features that lend well to running an online game. As others have said, adding Teamspeak/Ventrilo or similar really helps to speed things up.

Oddly it's not as fast as tabletop, even with the new dicecup feature that lets you roll all your attacks at the same time, but it's a big step up from where it was. It even remembers the initiative order and battlemap token positions if you need to stop mid-combat.

The really nice thing is that it allows you to play D&D at times that would normally be taboo. We play Thursday nights from 8pm-midnight. I couldn't do that with tabletop. Also, all my players are more than 300 miles away from me... so it gives us an opportunity to play when we otherwise wouldn't be able to.

The main disadvantage of FG is the cost.

Someone had a really nice comparison chart of all the different virtual tabletops out there, I'll see if I can't find the link.

Can you get onto the 'OpenRPG Veav I' server ?

If so I can make my way over there and we can try and work out your problems.

I'm free most of tonight (it's 5:20pm for me as I type this) - so if you haven't found someone to help you out yet, then I'm happy to try :)
