Giving Clothes a Magical Armour Bonus...Is it wrong?

Quint fighter: silk shirt +0 AC 0% arcane spell failure, no check penalty.

Quint wizard: wizard armor - lower the % arcane failure.

Although it's worth noting that Magic Vestment a/ is not the spell used to Craft Armor, and b/ makes the specific note that it can affect clothing - perhaps because the Feat cannot.

After all, the random armor tables make no provision for a +1 tunic.

Is this really any different than bracers of armor but taking up a different spot?

If it isn't, then make them function as bracers of armor taking up the vest slot, or another applicable one.

I would either handle it as an unslotted version of bracers of armor, with the normal doubled cost for unslotted items; or treat them as bracers of armor that filled up another slot, like cloak, robe, etc.

I have done this in my game and its prety cool.

I made a set of clothes (child sized to fit my 1/2ling monk character) that were treasure intombed with a child in his sarc, sarcoph.....coffin.

They were made of a black silk type fabric, which had fine mythril strands woven into the cloth. Since it was for a child it was only +1 armor bonus to AC, (yes I say it's an armor bonus) and a DR of 1/-. Also it was black and used by the young royal to hide in the shadows and spy on his folks and others in the castle. So they add a +5 to a hide check in darkness only.

Now, my players are kind of savy so I had to mention that a few items like this had been found before but the secret to making them is as lost as the civilization that made them. This keeps this type item in my control. I gave this to my monk player to balance out his share of the treasures in the group. I try to keep it fair that way.

It adds a little bit of mystery to the ancient civilization and a unique item for the character. I'd say it'd be fine to let them discover the secret to making it eventually. It makes a nice set of protection for a wizard/sorcerer or rogue character. Like someoen said teh clothes themselves have no bonus so with the +5 limit on it the item is not all that lopsided.

Anyway, that's my two coppers......

And what mighty fine coopers they were, cptg1481!

Thanks all. When I decide what to do in my game I will pot them for those who actually care! ;)

Yep. One might even say that a shirt that provides an armour bonus makes more sense than a pair of metal wristbands....

If you allow a Shirt of Armor, have it be just like a Bracers of Armor. A Shirt +3 and Bracers +2 would only give a +3, not +5, because thay are the same enchantment. Would this would do is allow more flexiblity in selecting magic items. Having a Shirt of Armor allows a caster or monk to have that item in the armor slot, thus freeing up the bracer slot for some other magic effect.
