Usually (that is, by mid-levels), you are better off simply sleeping in mithral armor. That +1 is better spent on things like fortification or straight AC.

Except for heavy armors, which still take a long time and assistance to put on properly. What I generally do, is when a caster gets a new set of bracers of armor, just ask 'em for their old pair and use that as sleeping-in type armor.

Or if you want to be super-slick, Bracers of Armor with Fortification.

Sure, if you use medium armor and can afford the extra +9,000gp that medium mithril armor will cost you.

The +1 can be expensive, but if you're getting surprised in your sleep a lot, it may be worth it.
