Globe Debate (Sage Answers)

First Post
You may remember the debate about the globe of invulnerability and whether it affected all spells within its confined of the appropriate levels or just spells coming in from outside.

I have finally gotten a reply from the sage on the topic...

SAGE
"The spell description clearly says that spells can be cast through or out of the globe, but not *inside* the globe. (There's no debate about the spell here, there *is* amazement that there's a debate about it anywhere--it's one of the best-described spells in the game.) If a spell's area, target, or effect lies inside the globe, the spell is suppressed. Spells you have running on yourself stop functioning if you're in the globe. But you can blast away at targets or areas that lie outside the globe. Likewise, the globe does not block line of effect for spells. The bad guys can blast things behind, but not in, the globe."

So at least as far as the sage is concerned the wording in the spell is correct and the spell will shut down for instance the mage's own haste, fly, mage armor, shield etc as long as he is in the globe.

Thanks for quoting the response. Could you include the question as well? Evaluating Sage answers is easier when in the context of the actual question.

Thanks.

Whole message EXCEPT for edits of non-globe-question stuff.

The crux of the matter is this...

the 3e version of minor globe and globe of invulnerability says that spell
effects in the globe are suppressed. As it is written it seems it will apply
to any of the appropriate levels spells EVEN those cast INSIDE THE GLOBE or
cast prior to the globe. As an example, a mage with haste and mage armor and
shield up who casts the globe would have all three of these suppressed by
his own globe. An enemy rnning into the globe and trying to cast blindness
on some else INSIDE the globe would have his spell be suppressed too.

The "old style" interpretation is that only spells coming FROM outside to
INSIDE are suppressed. They seem to interpret the spell hollow so spells
crossing the barrier at 10' radius are suppressed but those already inside
are not "entering" and thus cannot be "excluded."

In earlier editions of the game this spell was indeed seen as not affecting
spells inside that stay inside, like a caster's own mage armor or shields.

Which is correct?

Would a mage casting a globe have his own running spells of 1st-3rd shut
down?
