Gnoll racial levels

On the WotC website they have the racial level breakdown for certain LA +1 races like the Aasimar and Tiefling.

Anyone know about the racial level breakdown for gnolls? Basically how a player can have a gnoll at 1st level without the +1 LA, and then build up to a "regular" gnoll before taking class levels.

I don't have Savage Species, so if it's in there, could you write up the barebones explanation of it?

Cheers

It's in Races of the Wild. I won't provide a breakdown since it comes close enough to posting copyrighted stuff, but I can give some advice.

Start with a standard gnoll, which has the following characteristics (from the Gnoll monster entry and the Humanoid type in the SRD):

- +4 Str, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha
- Medium size, 30 ft. move
- Darkvision 60 ft.
- +1 natural armor
- 2 Humanoid HD (d8 HD, medium BAB, good Fort save, poor Ref and Will saves)
- 2+Int modifier skill points, class skills Listen and Spot
- Proficient with simple weapons, battleaxe and shortbow
- Proficient with light armor and shields (except tower shields)

A gnoll with no class levels is an ECL 3 (2 racial levels +1 LA) creature, so divide up the characteristics above over three levels.

Ensure that you don't front-load the class, but that your gnoll monster class is comparable to a character with a PHB race and class at all levels (say, a human fighter).

Note that many people consider the gnoll to be somewhat underpowered for a ECL 3 race.

Thanks for the copyright honesty FireLance! WotC nods approval ;)

Luckily, I do have access to Races of the Wild, and I can't believe I missed looking there.
They have a whole awesome section on gnolls and their potential for being non-evil.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
