Goblins and Hobgoblins ate my characters!

Nightchilde-2

First Post
Ever have one of those nights when the dice just rock for you but your character's can't get a good roll in to save their life?

THat was me this weekend. In the final battle of the night, the party faced a 4th-level hobgob fighter and his 2nd-level goblin barbarian bodyguard, vs. a party of five 2nd-3rd level PCs. All the dice rolls went in the favor of the hobgob and gob-barb. Almost all the dice rolls went against the favor of the PCs.

During the entire battle, the PCs only landed two hits. Fortunately (for them), this was a "warning attack" by the hobgob & his goblin underlings on the village, so he left them with a warning after three of the five PCs were dying and a fourth one was severely wounded.

Yes, this is the same group that got beat down by some giant ants a couple weeks ago. :) Since we switched to 3.5, this group has really learned a couple of lessons in humility. :)

Is there any priest of Beshaba in your group ? disguised as a priest of Tymora ? or they will not live long !

It's a homebrew world. We have a single PC that is a cleric, though the character hasn't yet figured that out yet. The character was chosen by the goddess of fate and luck to be one of her clerics, but she acts in secret and didn't tell him of such. The player took a level in cleric of the Lady, but the character just hasn't clued into that yet. He's been "accidentally" casting spells here and there. Those around him just get luckier (bless spell) after a short prayer, or luckily stabalize if dying (cure minor wounds) and he's treating them after asking for a bit o' luck. Though the character's starting to suspect that *something* is going on.

Yeah, they've been in a world of hurt of late. ;)

Why does a 4th level hobgoblin fighter have a second level goblin barbarian as a bodyguard  I mean, isn't he already a better combatant than his bodyguard?

Well, the original plan was for the hobgoblin (y'know, the number of times I've written hogboglin rather than hobgoblin over the last two days has inspired me to write up a new creature colled the hogboglin) to throw the gob-barb at the PCs to make a getaway. So...yeah...cannon fodder basically. :)

I was talking to my stepbrother a couple years ago just before he took a trip to Borneo. He had to get immunizations first and he mentioned "Hemoglobin." Now, he hasn't played D&D since he was a kid (12-13 yrs old), but it came out "Hemogoblin." To which I immediately replied "Aren't those the vampiric bugbears in Module Z12?"

He sprayed beer all over the coffee table. :D
