Going through the Tomb of Horrors(3.5) the first time...

There is a tone of slight annoyance in the post, and that's for two reasons: one, the design of the Tomb isn't that fun -unless- you enjoy playing the game the way I'm playing it right now,

...

This is an utterly unsupportable assertion.

I do like the "problem-solving" style of play as both player and DM, which is why I like Tomb of Horrors, and why I'm currently gearing up to run Gygax's "Necropolis" (the final section of which is essentially Tomb of Horrors on steroids), but I realize it's not for everyone and agree that it seems like a very odd choice for introducing new people to the game -- if they like the module too bad because they'll never play another one like it (except possibly "Necropolis"); if they don't, the fact that they'll never play another one like it is little consolation if it's made them lose interest in the game altogether.

Necropolis is a different beast, though. It's an entire campaign, and even while the characters are exploring the tomb, there are other things going on (and there's a lot more combat in the Necropolis than in ToH).

I've run Necropolis in full using 3e, and we had a blast.

Cheers!

Let me clarify -- unless you enjoy playing D&D primarily as a problem-solving activity, Tome of Horrors isn't that fun. The roleplayers get annoyed at all the traps and the lack of NPC interaction, and the combat guys get annoyed because the trap to monster ratio is skewed heavily in favor of the traps. In addition, if you're not a casting class, your options go down quite a bit as well.

TOMB
TOMB TOMB TOMB!

And no, I don't agree with you. But, eh, courses for horses.

Visually, this amuses me, but (seriously) DungeonDelver, if you have a problem with what another poster is saying (or how they're saying it, or whatever), hit the *report* buttom, rather than single them out in the thread itself. That's why we have mods here.

In any case, Kunimatyu, it sounds like you and the rest of your group is having a blast playing the ToH :D Good on you for your inginuity (sp?).

cheers,
--N

* Our standard tactic so far is to summon a small animal from the bag of tricks, have the Cleric use a light wand on it, have me use speak with animals and tell it which squares to walk into, and basically have it trigger all the traps for us. while we watch from a safe distance.

Light doesn't work on creatures. It targets an object. Tie pebbles around their necks.
