Goliath Seeker & Thrown Weapons ?

Races:
Elves and shifters are the most common
seekers, since both their natural inclinations toward
primal paths and their inherent abilities make them
well matched with the capabilities of the class. Goliaths
who favor ranged combat sometimes become
seekers (preferring thrown weapons over bows
or crossbows), and wilden seekers are also fairly
common.

I'm looking to play a seeker in our new LFR campaign so we're trying to pay close attention to rules and little details. The above was taken directly from the Seeker preview PDF from October 2009 and got me to thrinking about ranged classes using a thrown weapon instead of a bow, crossbow or sling. There is also a nice picture in the PDF file of a PC dual-wielding a pair of what i think are Heavy Throwing Axes, having already loosed one which is sticking out of the collerbone of the enemy (very cool imo). My question is how would you account for a ranged class that wants to use Thrown weapons instead of something like a Bow or Crossbow? Do you force the player to purchase a dozen throwing weapons or just assume it returns to him? This is bad for flavor...but good for record keeping. Something small like throwing knives or shuriken aren't much of an issue, i'm really just talking about larger thrown weapons such as Javelins or Heavy Throwing Axes. These are expensive for 1st lvl characters to buy more than 1 or 2 total at 1st lvl.

This also goes for a magic item with the same concept. Let's say i'm a ranged throwing class and i find a sweet Magic Javelin. Do i have to retrieve it after each time i throw it? that would seem to totally kill the ranged class concept.

Thanks and happy hunting!

Well all magic weapons when thrown returns to your hand at some point before the start of your next turn (again, with the hangover i do not remember exactly where I saw that or when it happens, but I am very very sure about that.)

But there are other issues with a Goliath Seeker, the stat bonuses are very subpar. Almost as bad a race/class combo as you can get. None of the racial feats are very good for the seeker class. Also the Seeker really needs some good range on its powers, many of which are limited by the weapon you use, heavy thrown weapons are usually going to be worse in this department as well.

It's a workable idea, but you won't be amazed at how effective you are very often.

considering your seeker abilities are Wis/Dex and the Goliath is Str/Con i believe, yeah, that build would be terrible. I don't plan on being a Goliath, but it just made me think about a thrown weapon ranged class in general. If anybody can find where it says magic weapons return to your hand, i'd love to know where it says that as i don't recall coming across it.

From the RPG.net thread spoiling the PHB3:

Spiritbound: Can use Str instead of Dex or Int to determine AC while not wearing heavy armor. +1 to attack with thrown weapons and they return to your hand. Spirit's Rebuke power - Enc, Trigger - enemy misses you in melee, thrown only, 1W + Str mod damage and push 1.

So a goliath could make a decent Str/Wis seeker. If you take Far Throw and use a javelin, you would have a range of 12/22, that's no longbow, but not bad regardless. And you should have good basic attacks, so you could even hop into melee sometimes.

The seeker builds are Wis/Dex and Wis/Str.

A Goliath wouldn't make a bad Seeker. The lack of a +2 to the primary stat won't kill them.
