Good early feats for Human Wizard?

DFK!

First Post
So, made my Wizard today in preparation for the full game starting.

Looking through the feats and picking two at first level though was fairly hard though.

They all seem so very combat heavy, mostly with blades or instruments I really won't be using. The only class-feat for Wizards I won't need until I can use more spells, and the only human-feat just doesn't seem worthwhile. +1 on Saving Throws? I guess 5% better odds could be worth a feat and I'm just not realizing how often it'll come into play, but I'm not really seeing that many places where Saving Throws are needed.

Also, the +1 dmg to attack of Type X & Y is kinda nice, but again seems a bit low/weak compared to other warrior (meaning "not wizard") centered feats.

This leaves me with Linguist and Skill Training. Unless I'm missing something. Any help/ideas/suggestions? Provided the suggestion isn't just "Quit griping the feats are t3h r0x0r." :D

I'm not sure what you want us to tell you. You say that you've looked at all the Feats and nothing struck you as being useful - I'm not sure anybody can convince you that they are useful if you've already seen 'em :)

Don't forget that each time you level you can replace a feat. So if you're just looking to start out, I'd say Jack of All Trades and Durability would be two decent-but-situational feats you could take. If you find you've always got extra healing surges when the day's over, or you never make untrained skill checks, swap those out for the +1 damage or Improved Initiative feats.

The other human feat, Action Surge, isn't the worst thing in the world. On the one hand, it's a moderate bonus that only comes into play every once in a while. On the other hand, it shows up when you need it most.

Improved Initiative seems like a decent idea for a controller; beat the minions on their Init, and then knock them down with Scorching Burst before they even get a chance to move.

Beyond that, you're pretty much out of aggressive options. I think 4E Toughness might prove to be a decent feat, defensive-wise, particularly when you consider that it will increase your Healing Surge value; over the course of the day, those 5 hit points could become 10.

the +1 to saving throws is awesome in the long run. lot's of stuff have "save ends" to stop effects.

but I'd have to say... toughness. 5hp is pretty important.

Action Surge: the +3 every other battle is quite good if you use it for a Close Blast or Area Burst that hits lots of targets.

Leather Armor Proficency, for some early game AC. (Retrain it out later, if you'd like).

If you're thinking about picking up Skill Training, see if you qualify for any of the Multiclass feats, and if they provide a skill you'd like. I'm planning my human wizard to become a multiclass Cleric.

Remember that saving throws are for ongoing damage (which a lot of things deal), as well as Death.

Expand Spellbook really sounds sexy to me.

I think Durable might very well be useful myself. Seeing as you're going to be doing a lot of getting healed.

But I'll toss my hat to Improved Init. I also like Action Surge.

Action Surge was awesome in my KotS playtest. The human Wizard uses his AP to lay into a formation of baddies with Acid Arrow. He got +3 from Action Surge, +2 from the Warlord's Tactical Insight and +2 from using his Wand of Accuracy. He hit all but one of those guys (a natural 1 - what can you do?).

Human Perseverance- worth it in the long term.
Toughness- worth it in the short term, probably also the long term. Gives you more than it seems, because it increases your healing surge value.
A damage feat for the damage type of your choice. Going acid heavy? Take the feat that boosts acid damage. Its not weak compared to warrior type feats- its exactly the same.
Alertness never hurt anyone.
Neither did Improved Initiative.

I'd also consider Skill Training. Its a one time investment that makes you permanently good at a skill. Or Skill Focus: Arcana, for better rituals.

You know, I didn't see too many spells that did acid damage.

Fortunately the feat for acid damage is the same as the feat for cold damage - Burning Blizzard. There's a Cold spell at just about every level.
