Good, Fair, Poor: Monster Making Help Wanted

NarlethDrider

First Post
Monster ideas abound in my head & I’m finally, after much procrastination  , getting around to stating them up via the guidelines in the 3.5 Monster Manual.

However, while there are some charts in the back of the book that helps create critters, there are some things I could use some help on.

The first is saving throws: Good, Fair, & Poor; how do you start up w/those? What is the starting ‘+’ that you start with for each condition?

Has anyone made a worksheet or some kind of other monster making aid? Please share :)

Thanks

Good saves are 2 + (1 per 2 HD). Poor saves are 1 per 3 HD.

So, for example, a 12 HD creature with a good Fort save and poor Ref/Will saves would have a base +8 Fort save and +4 Ref/Will saves.

Medium save s only exist in D20 modern.

Though to be honest, given how high con scores tend to be and how fast HD rack up, A medium fort save rather than a good fort save would let instant kill spells have a chance to be effective on monsters. As it stands, a lot of monsters have fort saves so high instant death is not worth having. Does a CR 7 hill giant really need a +12 fort save?

Don't get me wrong, I love monsters especially the big heavy hitters, but that does not mean they need to be virtually immune to poisons and death magic.

Here is what they look like.
