I've never really been able to understand why people dislike A Knight's Tale, even though I read all of the reasons people posted on the boards about it back when it came out. Its trailers certainly were not misleading; you could easily tell what kind of take it had on medieval times. It didn't take them seriously, just used the conventions to tell a rousing story. The tagline (from IMDb) was "He Will Rock You," for pete's sake. If you want a movie that takes the conventions seriously while still retaining a fantasy quality, I like Ladyhawke. Too bad about the synthesizer.

On the other hand, the prom in A Knight's Tale was pretty horrid. And I just don't like Shannyn Sossamon, no matter how pretty she is.

As far as good fantasy movies goes, Rob Roy was a movie that suffered because of its release so close to Braveheart. Excellent movie about maintaining your honor in the face of horrible odds, and I still say its climactic swordfight is the best ever put on film.

Ah, here's one of my favorite fantasy films: Excalibur. I have always had a high interest in the Arthurian tale, and this movie is one of my all time favs. Merlin, of course, my fav character from this movie. Wish I knew the actor's name of who played him though. Ah, well...*sigh*

Ah, my thanks, Sir Osis. It is much appreciated. Another good fantasy film, if it has not been mentioned, I think, is Legend. Yeah, I know it has Tom Cruise in it, but the overall fantasy theme is quite well, achieved, especially if you get to see the non-theater version. (the DVD is out on sale right now.) It makes more sense to me, in that version, than in the one that was shown in theaters.

The recent Ivanhoe mini is terrific. And did anyone mention Dragonslayer?

Nitpicky point: Be careful about what you call "fantasy." Many movies mentioned are set in the medieval/early Renaissance time period and may be inspirational to RPGs set in the same archtypal period, but aren't fantasy at all (The Lion in Winter, Braveheart, etc.).

EDIT: sorry, you did say "related."

I would add the Robin Hood remake with Uma Thurman & Sam Resnick from 1991. Makes Costner's film look like the piece of trash it really is.

Also add Seven Samurai to the list (a classic D&D scenario if I ever saw one).

And extra big attention should be paid to 13th Warrior - similar to Seven Samurai but with a stronger 'fantasy' feel to it (even though there is no 'real' magic in the movie - it is at least believed in).
