Good first-time PDF?

As another option, if you want some good game-related fiction, Monte Cook just released Children of the Rune for $4.00 over at the Sword and Sorcery Studios site. The PDF's there are non-DRM.

Not knowing exactly what you will want, and given that you are just looking for reading material and to get a feel for the wonderful world of PDFs, I suggest going for quantity. There are plenty of free/cheap PDFs out there, but there are very few PDFs that could keep you entertained for your entire flight.

There is a whole list of Free Stuff at RPGNow. Grab whatever looks interesting and get a great feel for what is out there. If you like a publisher/creator's free stuff, buy something from them.

On the other hand, there are a couple of good reads from Expeditious Retreat, the most recent being A Magical Society: Ecology and Culture.

Have Fun!

I second all praise for "Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe". You can find my own review in the reviews section of ENWorld.

I casually browsed Malhavoc's "Requiem for a god" and it seemed very good... you should probably consider it, as Malhavoc's PDFs will probably remove any doubt you might have about the quality of 3rd party products. The Malhavoc books I own are mostly crunch collections (lot's of flavour though), except for Cry Havoc (the one with the mass combat system), which might or might not be your cup of tea.

Not something good for entertaining reading on the plane, but my most used PDF, and easily the most bang for the buck was CMG's Plexus Lexus SRD bundle.

What's in it?

Everything! The entire 3.5 SRD, monster manual, spells, magic items, It's all there. And every time it is updated, you can download the update free.

Lets see, I need to describe it better, because I'm not covering the real utility of the program. There are a lot of PDF's one for sor/wiz spells, one for domain spells, cleric spells, druid spells, asassin spells, and they are bookmarked and arranged by level. I'm still doing a lousy job describing it, so I'll tell you what it does for me.

I have it on my laptop, which I take to games. In addition to being equivalent to an extra set of core books, It's very well organized. It literally shaves 50% or more off the time it takes to look up a spell, a rule, or a monster or magic item. All the time saved looking stuff up is extra gaming time. Here is a link, please note it's on sale right now. When I bought it I paid $12.50 (standard price at the time. It's easily worth twice that to me.

Now, if you will excuse me, it looks like I have new updates to download.

CMG Bundle
