Good Free Virus Protection

Fast Learner

First Post
I'm doing some consulting work for a non-profit medical clinic and they need virus software badly (running Housecall revealed a TON of worms). I've heard that there are at least one or two quite good virus protection/elimination programs out there, but since my work has usually been for companies that can afford to buy McAfee for their computers, I haven't made notes.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations for free, good virus software with regular updates?

Thanks in advance.

I got one.

AVG is da' bomb!

I've used it quite a bit. It's not as good as Norton, but it's not half as resource intensive, and it's works great.

Regardless of which AV program you go with, make sure you read the license agreement. Non-personal use (even for a non-profit) may very well be a no-no for some of them.

PS - I used AVG for awhile and was reasonably satisfied with it.

I too use AVG. The price was right, and it was certainly better than Norton AV. However, I've far from used every virus program out there, so I don't know exactly where AVG falls in the scheme of things.

Another vote for AVG

I too have been using AVG for a couple years, I've found it to be at least as good as the big two of Norton and McAffee.

I've used Anti-Vir and AVG. I like AVG better because a scan is faster, though I suppose the settings could be tweaked to make Anti-Vir faster. Also Anti-Vir would sometimes cause a lock up on booting and thus force a reboot and scandisc.

Stylistically, AVG looks better, in my opinion.

AntiVir, standard install on any PC for people who cannot afford a regular virusscanner. Combined with ZoneAlarm you have a reasonable protection against the worst of Internet.

Now if I could only convince people that having these things does not make clicking on every link or unknown email any more sensible. <sigh>
