I am a HUGE D&D newbie, and I was just wondering-- what are some good guidelines to follow for creating a D&D character, and what are some good ideas? Thanks!
If you are really newbie, try take a look at the "starting packages" in the class descriptions (especially for spells and feats, since there are very many of them). You can use them as example and change something you don't like.
Read the Description chapter for good ideas about alignment, and for further RP ideas choose a deity as a patron (even if you don't really need unless you are a Cleric) to give your character some more defined aims and morals in his life.
Choose a melee weapon and a ranged weapon for you PC only for flavor (except that he must be proficient of course), and don't try to find which weapons are better and why. In the same way, choose a race because you like the image of it, not because you think it's stronger.
If you play a spellcaster, read only the spell list and not the full spell description when you are choosing which spells to know/prepare.

Some classes are slightly easier to play than others. For example, if you want to play a mage, prefer Sorcerer over Wizard. If you want to play a combat-type, prefer Fighter or Barbarian. In general, the less amount of abilities you have to handle, the easier it is to play the character.
