Good mapping software for an overhead projector

A friend of mine is letting me borrow his overhead projector so I can create maps on a computer & use the projector to shine the map down onto the battlemat below. (the projector in question is an Epson PowerLite S3)

I have two options for a laptop - one is a newer laptop, but it runs Windows XP. The other is a 2 year old laptop, but it runs the newer Windows Vista.

I would prefer something free, if possible, that I can download from somewhere online.

However, if something is reasonably priced, I'd consider buying it.

While I haven't had much time to play with it, I hear that MapTools is an excellent program for using your projector.

There are a lot of answers here and really is based on how much effort you want to put into your maps.

DungeonCrafter is a basic tile mapper.

InkScape is a vector based paint program.

AutoRealm is a full featured mapper.
