Good Old School Cthulhu Module?

JesterPoet

First Post
I'm looking for a good, non-d20 Cthulhu module. I'd prefer it be something that could be played as a one-shot, but it could go a bit longer if necessary (so, something long like Masks of Nyarlathotep is out).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Chaosium doesn't really do individual modules like you find in D&D- they do collections of adventures, or campaigns. I think the shortest single adventures I've seen from them are still going to take 2-3 sessions. The first part of "Trail of Tsathoggua" might be suitable for you- I'm pretty sure it's still in print.

Of course, there's also a lot of stuff on the net. Try one of these sites:

Really? They put out so much stuff. I figured some of it must have been one-shot kinda stuff. Guess I was wrong. Thanks for the links, tho!

I've always just made up my own adventures, but I need something quick this time.

Actually, that's not true. They have put out several short adventure collections, usually with 4 single session adventures in them. Secrets is a great one to start with, and also take a look at Last Rites , and Before the Fall (sorry, I can't find a link for that one). I've got a few more single session adventure books at home as well, but can't think of the names off hand.

You could adapt some of the adventures from Blood Brothers 1 and 2, which were short non-Mythos adventures, usually with pre-made PC's. I think there were at least 10 adventures in each book, made with the 'we want a break, let's run something unusual and quick tonight' in mind.

One of my favorite Classic CoC adventures, "The Crack'd and Crooked Manse," apparently started out as a gaming convention adventure. It's ideal for a one-shot adventure. I think it was printed in the collection called "Mansions of Madness", but I could be wrong. (I'm at work at the moment, so I can't check the shelf ;) )

Unfortunately, a lot of the "classic" CoC adventure collections are out of print. You might check eBay or your FLGS (if they carry used gaming materials).

Yep, that crooked house one is great, and it is indeed in the Mansions of Madness adventure anthology. The Hidden Masters and Cthulhu Classics anthologies also have some swell adventures, as does the Pagan Publishing anthology Mortal Coils.

Most of the Call of Cthulhu adventures are collected in an anthology rather than being released singly. Check out the books, not all of the big ones are campaigns.

I'll second Unseen Masters. Three fantastic modern-day (by default) long adventures. They're definitely intended for experienced Cthulhu groups.

I also liked A Resection of Time: it's modern-day too.

"The Stars Are Right" has some good modern-day Cthulhu adventures. One of my personal favorites is "Coming Full CIrcle" by Pagan Publishing. Not traditional Mythos stuff, but very evocative and well-made. Go to rpg.net and do a search for reviews.

I highly recommend many of the short adventures published by Pagan Publishing, especially "Grace Under Pressure" and "In Medias Res." Both were published in _The Unspeakable Oath_ magazines, and were later reprinted by Pagan in collections.
