I do love the food network. I *love love love* 30 Minute Meals with Rachel Ray!

I'll just use your quote with a minor adjustment ;)

I like House. Thats a cool show.

Law and Order SVU is pretty good.

my new tivo is chock full of cartoons. boomerang is showing batman: the animated series and superman every midnight, disney shows x-men, spider-man, gargoyles and TICK.
my gf records who's line is it anyway, cuz its probably the easiest guarantee for a laugh on tv. And of course Justice League, Family Guy, American Dad and South Park.

you can probably catch most of veronic mars and lost in repeats. and if you havent seen firefly, dont forget to grab that when it hits sci-fi at the end of the month.

I also tape X-Play, Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption and Baseball Tonight, but those are pretty specific.

Buffy, Angel, Twin Peaks, Gargoyles, Firefly, Veronica Mars are best watched in order, so I wouldn't just tape them if you've never seen them.

each of the three major networks is trying an alien-related show in the fall, so they might be worth checking out. they'll either suck, or get cancelled :D

Mostly, tv sucks :D

Yep, except that they generally don't end on a "happy" note ("Yeah, we caught the serial rapist, but now one of his victims raped someone else.")
Angel definitely...The X-Files if you didn't catch them when they were first on (or own all of the dvd sets).
Funny thing about The X-Files, Dagger75 wants to run a Delta Green game, but he's not a big fan. Or maybe that was MEG Hal...
The Dead Zone is good...
Rescue Me and The Shield are the class of F/X...

Essential:
House (unless you have something against medical dramas or you're in the medical field)
Avatar: The Last Airbender

lesser:
Lost
Deadwood
Celebrity Match Game
What's My Line

As for recording and watching at the same time, it depends on your set up: any DVr will let you watch something that you've already finished recording while something else records. If you want to record two things at once, or watch one program while recording another, you'll need a dual reciever and a dual LNB (the pluggy-in part on the actual dish itself) I've seen more than a dual LNB, and in fact, I'm pretty sure that we have a quad LNB, some to think of it, but we only have one dual receiver with DVR and one regular reciever, so we can record two programs while watching two other programs recorded earlier while at the same time my mother can watch another (live) program in her bedroom on the non-recording box.
