BoVD gave a few nice things but not nearly as nice as BoED gives. Overall I'd say I'd much rather fix one or the other to make it a level playing field. (Well as level as you can mechanic wise!)

Vile Evil is self-destructive and irrational, even amongst the Lawful.
Exalted Good is stupid and hidebound, even with the Chaotics.

I think the PHB alignments will win, but the slow march of time will ensure that eventually, Allegiances will take over.

And then the world will make a whole lot more sense.

That said, as WotC has the rights to Mordenkainen, I think it's as definitive a source as any.
