April 22, 2003 – Goodman Games is pleased to announce an agreement with Chainmail Bikini Games to publish in print its best-selling PDF "Beyond Monks: Art of the Fight." The 96-page print edition will be available in July at a suggested retail price of $20.00. More than a third of the book will be new material. Customers who already own the PDF edition will have an "upgrade to print" option available.

Beyond Monks: Art of the Fight is a d20 sourcebook designed to add the excitement of the martial arts to any campaign. The print version will include the new Martial Artist core class, more than a dozen prestige classes (including Crooked Monk, Perfect Weapon, and Drunken Master), and a wealth of material for running martial-arts campaigns, from 100 new feats to martial artist archetypes to rules for cinematic combats.

"The Beyond Monks PDF has already changed the way many d20 gamers play martial artist characters," said James Garr, President of Chainmail Bikini Games and author of the sourcebook. "With the print version, we hope to give them even more options."

"There’s a reason Beyond Monks has been one of RPG Now’s Top 30 books for more than a year," said Joseph Goodman, President of Goodman Games. "Since day one it’s been recognized as a useful, high-quality sourcebook that fills a real need in most campaigns."

Gamers who already make use of the Beyond Monks PDF edition will be able to credit the cost of their PDF purchase toward the print version. Full details on the "upgrade to print" option will be made available when the book comes out.

Yes -- and yes. All the fantasy material is 3.5 compatible. There will be some d20 modern material in the back of the book, and that will obviously be d20 modern compatible.

What are the new additions? In addition to the option to credit the pdf against a print version will there be an upgrade to the pdf or will it stay the same?

Congrats to ChainmailBikini.

As a fellow pdf publisher, its always great when one of us little guys makes it into print!

Fanstastic.

Personally, I like Beyond Monks for the feats. Some of the best (most interesting, well conceived and balanced) in the industry. Can't wait to see it in print!

There's a LOT of new material. I'll let James detail the new additions... James? :)

As for a PDF upgrade -- there will not be one; it will stay to the same.

We're very happy to be associated with Goodman Games on this project. Joseph has been great to work with, and we're looking forward to July. The one question I get asked at Cons is "When is Beyond Monks going to be printed?" and now I can answer that question.

Here's a run-down of the new material:

-The book has expanded from 64 to 96 pages.
-It is fully compatible with the upcoming 3.5 revision.
- It is fully illustrated and the layout has changed a bit. Some things haven't changed; the prestige classes still begin on their own pages, and the chapters are organized the same.
- Everything has been playtested and copyedited more, and tightened up overall.
-The martial artist class has been tweaked: The list of bonus feats no longer includes ki feats, and there are no longer any supernatural martial secrets. It has a few more martial secrets to replace the ones it lost, however. Some martial secrets are more powerful than they used to be, and we feel like they are more balanced now.
- There are 3 new prestige classes, the Perfect Weapon who disdains the use of weapons, and the Serpent Underfoot, a small-sized character who has taken a religious vow to fight the large folk, and the Ki Mystic, a spellcasting monk.
- The Ki Blaster has been renamed to "Ki Adept" and is now a 10 level class. The Storm Lord has been renamed to Storm Seeker.
- Several prestige classes have been tweaked for balance or clarity. The Psynergist uses + 1 manifester levels rather than getting additional power points, etc.
- Every prestige class has art, and a complete sample NPC, similiar in format to Call of Duty.
- There is a new type of feat, the Stance feat, that you can use to assume a "fighting posture" that has both benefits and drawbacks.
- There are more feats, and some feats have been modified. A couple have been removed to make room for more interesting feats. I count 61 General feats, 40 Ki feats, 7 Stance feats, 21 Style Mastery feats, and a couple more elsewhere in the book.
By comparion there were 81 feats in the PDF, plus 16 Style Mastery feats.
- There are also some guidelines on converting some of the martial secrets to feats, for even more.
- There is a small section on Training for Feats that can help you add the element of training to your campaign.
- There is a new section that offers tactical advice on creating and playing monk characters.
- The drinking rules from the Drinking and Fighting section have been replaced with the drinking rules from Tournaments, Fairs and Taverns' drinking rules, with permission from E.N. Publishing. Built on top of these rules is a bonus prestige class, our version of the Drunken Master.
- There is a new race that favors the monk class.
- Some of the magic items have been tweaked, and we've added a couple of new ones.
- Added a d20 Modern appendix. In it we added two new advanced classes, the Nimble Fighter and the Warrior Philosopher. They are like the Martial Artist advanced class, but are based on Fast and Dedicated Heroes, rather than Strong Heroes. We also added a couple of new feats, and a variant non-lethal combat system.
