Goodman is clearly going to the GSL.

If for nothing else, I must applaud Goodman Games for doing such as good job promoting their new adventures! All this discussion has generated more continous exposure than a straight press release would ever have done!

Viva le marketing!

"Yes, we're looking at options to make the 3.5 DCC's still available under 4E rules. We originally planned to convert the 3E modules via downloadable conversion documents, so you could buy DCC #1 at your local store then download the file to get the 4E stats. That unfortunately won't be feasible under the new guidelines for 4E products. But there are some other possibilities, like releasing new print versions that are overhauled to 4E. Nothing's final yet, but that's where we're leaning now.

Still looking GSL to me.

I had skipped the primary part of this discussion because I hadn't yet digested the GSL, but now that I've given it a careful look, the provision for Goodman Games publishing early is found at 6.1 in the GSL. So, as long as there is no "backward conversion", they can convert a current line to the new GSL regardless of release date, as the previous GSL is considered to hold sway. The only provision for this is that they have to discontinue manufacturing and publication of all products in the previous line, which Goodman Games is doing.

Question answered.

Good catch.

Or it would be if it wasn't a completely wrong interpretation. 6.1 says nothing of the sort.

Well, I agree he didn't interpret everything correctly, but he looks to have understood one or two things correctly.

"6.1 OGL Product Conversion. If Licensee has entered into the “Open Gaming License version 1.0” with Wizards (“OGL”), and Licensee has previously published a product under the OGL (each an “OGL Product”), Licensee may publish a Licensed Product subject to this License that features the same or similar title, product line trademark, or contents as such OGL Product (each such OGL Product, a “Converted OGL Product”, and each such Licensed Product, a “Conversion”). Upon the first publication date of a Conversion, Licensee will cease all manufacturing and publication of the corresponding Converted OGL Product and all other OGL Products which are part of the same product line as the Converted OGL Product, as reasonably determined by Wizards (“Converted OGL Product Line”). Licensee explicitly agrees that it will not thereafter manufacture or publish any portion of the Converted OGL Product Line, or any products that would be considered part of a Converted OGL Product Line (as reasonably determined by Wizards) pursuant to the OGL. Licensee may continue to distribute and sell-off all remaining physical inventory of a Converted OGL Product Line after the corresponding Conversion is published, but will, as of such date, cease all publication, distribution and sale (and ensure that third party affiliates of Licensee cease their publication, distribution and sale) of any element of a Converted OGL Product Line in any electronic downloadable format. For the avoidance of doubt, (a) any OGL Product that is not part of a Converted OGL Product Line may continue to be manufactured, published, sold and distributed pursuant to the OGL; and (b) this Section 6.1 will survive termination of this Agreement."

Yes.. that is section 6.1. And nothing in it leads to the conclusions he arrived at.

I agree I don't see how he came to this conclusion:

"...they can convert a current line to the new GSL regardless of release date, as the previous GSL is considered to hold sway..."

It definitely doesn't say about the release date being able to be done before October 1st.

Still, posts by Joe, like the one above, convince me further that he is going by the GSL.

I would still love to be wrong, but everything indicates that is what is happening.

Unless the GSL changes between now and then the products from GG coming out at Gencon are not GSL. That is a fact.

They may be planning on using the GSL further down the road,
but those products scheduled for release prior to October 1st are absolutely not being released under the GSL.

You know, this seems simple, but it's the truth. The GSL prohibits selling items released under the GSL before October 1st, so any products released before October 1st couldn't be GSL, period.

These are either:

A) Under a special arrangement with WotC.
B) Unofficial D&D 4e products (like the old Judge's Guild stuff)
C) Systemless books
D) Something Else

What they aren't, however, is GSL. And all we know so far is that Goodman has commented he can't release dual-system versions of the DCC line under the GSL.
