Goodman is clearly going to the GSL.

But note that by going with the GSL you're not stopped from facing the same issues.

The quality controls on the GSL are just anti-porn, anti-racism, and anti-gore.

and possibly nudity. Fantasy without nudity... I will have non of that... and btw nudity is not porn.

You would also not be able to do very realistic or believable middle ages/dark ages without gore, its also hard to do a good vampires without lots of gore. Alot of d7d vampires seem impotent because wizards refuses to do them properly.

If I had to bet 100 here is what I would bet:

WOTC is not making special licenses available.
If you are using the GSL, you cannot sell before August(?).
Therefore, Goodman Games is not going under the GSL initially.

Publishing a 4E adventure module for him is going to be easy. He has experience going the copyright route. Look at his 1E modules. He can get away with it. He has been down that path before and knows the legalities of it. So he releases these modules on October 1st.

He can still go GSL when it becomes applicable. Thus sell-off your 3.x crap.

It's that simple.

I think the chances are very good that Goodman Games have a special license with WoTC to produce 4E supplements for GenCon.

I say this because legal stuff is not something a small company would willingly get into. I might WISH they were going via a copyright challenge, but the fact is, that is pretty unlikely.

I agree it could be that simple. However, the bottom line is that it over whelmingly looks like GG will be doing the DCC line under the GSL. That is the end result I was hoping not to see.

Oh and the idea that Goodman are first flouting WoTC copyright and then going via GSL after GENCON is, frankly, ridiculous. Do we real;y expect that WoTC will enter into a licensing arrangment with a company that has done such a thing! Wouldn't there be legal ramifications to NOT challenging a copyright infringement?

Just remember; anything is possible when you don't know what you are talking about (and we DON'T)! I am also hearing alot of static from ORCUS as well; this is a sign of impending developments I think.

The interesting thing here is that the GSL we see on the WOTC website is not likely the same as the one they had to pay $500 to see, as there were undoubtedly concessions for pre-release and early release stipulations in the contract as reward for paying the money to see it early. I don't see anyone here mentioning that they paid the $500 to see that particular license.

He is a bit too quiet. My gut feeling regarding NG and 4e is getting worse and worse by the day :-S

Then again, my gut is often wrong..

Kind of.

But a company signing under the GSL doesn't mean they HAVE to use the items under the GSL. It doesn't mean that you're going to get a better quality in product, it just means you're getting an end product with a "Licensed for D&D" on it.

I can make a module that uses orcs, and giants, and rats, and gnomes and elves and not step one foot on any wizards IP and not use the GSL. At the same time, I can make a module that uses the GSL and is completely horribly done.

Snip...

The long and short of it is this.. there is nothing in the GSL that says your product will work with 4e, or would work well with 4e.

All that the GSL is for is for approving products to have a licensed sticker on them.

Yeah, well of course the GSL in itself doesn't assure me that the product is good, that's what companies like Goodman Games and Necromancer's Games are for.

Nobody paid $500.

There was nothing to pay $500 for, even if people wanted too, since the GSL was delayed and delayed.

(EDIT - or even $5,000 !)
