Got an idea for a column? Pitch it here.

"Ask Enoch" letter column.

Readers would submit questions as players (or as PCs), and Enoch would give them sagely advice of questionable but entertaining value.

Such advice would range from actually helpful to terrible, as befits the situation, but never as spiteful or edition-warful.

Gaming group of the week/month

Cool ideas so far! And pitched by good writers too :)

With all the talk about the differences among gamers, it would be interesting to have some sort of gaming group of the week/month feature, done as an interview with writer commentary about the "take away lessons" from that group. Could be text with photos, podcast, or video. It would be awesome for example to look over the shoulder of one of Piratecat's games and meet his group. Something like that would go a long way to bringing the ENWorld community (and greater gaming community) together simpatico and showcase some cool/funny tricks or techniques or moments.

I don't have the connections to make something like this happen, but it would be cool nonetheless! :)

I recently started an RPG of the month club, playing a different RPG each month. I've written up descriptions for my company's website. As an EN World column I might encourage the people at home to play along and get their feedback.

A couple columns I'd like to see:

Introducing younger players to RPG's
-Do's/Don'ts
-Introducing the game
-How to handle violence
-How to handle rewards
-Pacing
-Lessons learned

Using technology in TTRPG's
-What works, what doesn't
-Pitfalls and pratfalls

I'm not knowledgeable enough to write either, but if someone else wants to...

Tiresomely over-qualified in this - someone fresh to this stuff would be good :)

Community

Morrus

I think you know that I am very fond of your efforts and ENWorld. I just celebrated my 40th birthday yesterday, and as a result have been very reflective of the many things that have added tremendous value to my life. Without a doubt ENWorld sits on that list.

I value how this community can bring people together to share their experiences around the roleplaying hobby. Further, I feel we are all invigorated by the exciting announcement of 5e and the challenging goal that Mike has set to bring about a unifying game that honors both our roots, and the best that TRPG's have to offer.

I think it is a perfect time to reach back and honor those roots with an interview series similar to the TV show, Inside the Actor's Studio (with James Lipton), that offers an opportunity for us to hear right from the mouth of all those that shaped the foundations of this hobby, industry, and community. The idea would be to host in a formal "recorded audio conference call" that could be listened to live with members of the community. We would talk with artists, designers, and producers, and company leaders from across the industry about their gaming roots, their early career, and the lasting impact they hoped to leave on the hobby. Ultimately we would seek to understand their "why". We would take questions from the participants from our community, which would likely lead to understanding more about what when on "behind the scenes" that were obstacles on their path to success and how they overcame them.

I would be honored to be considered among those who could contribute to such an effort. I would see these being released in written text and/or podcast format through the ENWorld community. Good gaming!

-Andy

Theoretical Assumptions

If it is for a column to be produced just once a month then I will also pitch and make a proposal.

Title of Column: Theoretical Assumptions, or (if you prefer) Real Gaming

Column Contents: The basic contents of the column Theoretical Assumptions will involve all aspects of gaming, but will concentrate upon game theory, development, and structure, in a wide of examination of venues and types. The column will discuss, but will not be limited to, subjects such as Adventuring, Campaigning, Design, Game Development, Game Mechanics, Game Play, Game Structure, Game Theory, Nature of Play, Relational Aspects between Game Theory and Gaming and Real Life, Refereeing, Scenario Development, etc. Basically anything and everything pertaining to gaming.

The column will be slanted towards Role Play Gaming but will also cover Alternate Reality Gaming, Board Gaming, Internet Gaming, Parallel Reality Gaming, Video and Computer Gaming, Virtual Reality, etc, and possible future developments in those Industries. Occasionally I may also do product reviews, perhaps on a prearranged, cyclical basis.

The intent of the column will be fourfold, to discuss issues of importance and interest in gaming, to advertise and increase social and business share in EN World as a place of general gaming expertise and interest, to promote stimulating, and perhaps even novel and unique theories in gaming, and to analyzing the way gaming and game theory can be usefully applied to real world advantage in real life.

Addendum and Additional Considerations and Productions: I'll always meet my deadlines (assuming no personal disaster like a personal or family emergency), and will follow your formatting requirements. However, if I am chosen as one of the columnists then I will of course need to know exact formatting requirements, word counts, and everything else necessary to complete the column to your specifications. I desire as much foreknowledge as possible of what my editors desire in formatting structure whenever I write a piece or contribute a column. I usually prefer to beat my deadlines well in advance so that my editors can review content and so that there is plenty of time for corrections, if any are necessary.

I can, by Sunday Evening (1/15/2012) produce a list of possible subject matter(s) for the next six to twelve months, and by the 20th of January I can produce a draft test copy of a possible column post for you to analyze.

If more than one column, by more than one writer, is to be produced monthly then I can do cooperative and co-authored work as well.

I can also write on particular subjects if you desire, or produce columns based on thematic content or special seasonal materials if you so wish. I just need advanced notification so that I can prepare the materials or do the appropriate research.

I would also be open to writing on special subjects suggested by the EN World posters and contributors.

I am not at all afraid of controversial and unusual subject matter, but I will not present such matter in an abrasive or disruptive manner. I will however, on occasion, present material that will be considered controversial or unorthodox.

Also, would there be, on occasion and with enough editorial notification, a chance for quest columnists within my column? Or co-written columns on subjects of specialized expertise? And, if possible, I would like to cross-link and/or cross-post the column to my personal and gaming bog, Facebook page, business page and/or any other appropriate venue of my internet presence.

And I would like the right to advertise both the column and EN World through my social media and internet presence.

Pay arrangements are negotiable, especially if cross marketing efforts are made.

End of proposal.

Adventures in Appendix N

The original Dungeons and Dragons was born of two loves: that of games, and that of fantastic literature. Of the latter we can have no doubt because Gygax himself gave us an exhaustive, if not complete, list of the inspiring works, many of which I fear that newer or younger players have not had the pleasure of having been exposed to.

Adventures in Appendix N would be part history lesson, part review and part "Giants of the Earth" style column, delving into how to bring the works to life in our games, either directly or through inspiration. As the foundation stones of the game we all play, no matter what edition we call ours, these works will serve to inspire us and excite us and, in the best of cases, get us running to the table to live them for ourselves.

The primary focus of the column would be sword and sorcery fiction, from Conan to Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser to the Black Company and Vlad Taltos, with the occasional side trek into weird fantasy (such as the works of Clark Ashton Smith), high fantasy (Tolkien, especially The Hobbit), and even sword and planet "fantasy" such as John Carter. Each column will focus on a single work and examine it from both a literary (briefly) and a gaming (more extensively) perspective.

A number of years ago (prior to my son's arrival) I was a writer for White Wolf, working on Exalted and Gamma World d20. I have been busy with work and parenthood since, but have been slowly maneuvering my way back toward professional involvement in the gaming industry again, and an ENWorld column seems like just the place to start.

As I flow gracefully into my elder years and become the bitter old man that destiny intended, I find myself scrutinizing things in far more detail. I sat down the other day and realized that I buy MMORPGs despite my hatred for the combat system, I play an edition of a tabletop game that I feel the need to gut to enjoy, and I watch TV shows

I would like to write a monthly article from the eyes of a bitter, old (34 and counting) cynical gamer. More than a rant, this column will covertly nest within the 300 to 500 words geek news, gaming tips and product reviews. My lengthy history in the midst of the gaming culture has provided me quite a few friends in the publishing, video game and board game industries.

I have been a reviewer at DrivethruRPG for 6 years and earning a paycheck as a writer for 16 years.
