Got Hobbits?

Hell, yes, I've got hobbits... only they're called halflings by everybody which is exactly what the men of the West called them back in Tolkien anyway. I too didn't enjoy the kenderization of the halflings in 3E. I prefer them hairy-footed, beer-swilling, gardener-respecting, several-meals-a-day-eating hobbits to a bunch of wanderlusty mini-human gypsies.

And complaints about them being too homebody and only the real weirdos adventure are bogus. That's true of EVERY race of character in D&D. The vast majority of any race would be non-adventuring NPCs. It takes a special kind of nutball to go out and adventure no matter whether you're human, dwarf, elf, or halfling.

I'm not a big fan of tinkergnomes either. Kinder and tinkergnomes were fine for Dragonlance, but let them stay there as part of that campaign's special atmosphere.

we had feats back in the day. we called them "called shots" and your plusses came into play.

Might I suggest, then, that you are looking at feats in entirely the wrong way? They are customizable class abilities, not power ups or special moves. Whirlwind attack? 1E kensai ability. Cleave? Sweep attacks.

Ive never really cared for hobbits, myself. Or halflings.

I'd like to see a hobbit/hin showdown campaign. A sneak, steal, climb, and sling battle royale for the right to be named the official halflings.

My money's on the Shire lads, just because they're tougher.

I will second that! 20 gold pieces for the Shire Boys!

The Kender were considered, but since they'd "borrow" everything from the spoons for the luncheons to the tent pegs, they were unanimously turned down. ;)

****
yeah, D&D halfings, now that people are saying it, are VERY much like Kender - they also forgot the +1 to all saves. 'Lucky', indeed.

Damn you DragonLance - first you gave use those crappy dragon colors, then tinkergnomes - now you gave use 'halfings'. *Smite's Evil* There, that oughta teach you a lesson!

Crappy dragon clors? Dragons in D&D have always been color coded :)

But yes, a pox upon Dragonlance, for turning all gnomes into tinkers. I despide tinker gnomes, and the evolution of almost all gnomes every into them now (even outside of D&D) has caused me to excise them from my game world.

IMO, Dragonlance accomplished the impossible: it actually made Halflings and Gnomes interesting.

made them wandering nomads.

made them slender. took the hair off their feet.

the picture of Lidda just screams Tasselhoff.

edit: alignment issues too. OD&D halflings are Lawful. 1edADnD halflings are LG. and what are the new ones??? with rogue as favored class... bah... KENDER. kender... kender...

I want to buy you a drink! Well put. The perfect reply to the complaints on hobbit adventurers.
