got Wilderlands?

Mine shipped yesterday and is IN TRANSIT from amazon! And I am thinking that I'll get a second one too, that 2000 copy limit is a teaser to keep one shrink-wrapped.

Got mine!!! (Im posting this on the Necro Games board too..don't know the etiquette...hope its kosher)

Man, where to start.

Got the email on Friday that my set had arrived, unfortunately by the time I got the email it was too late to get down to the shop to grab it, so Saturday was the day.

Walked in Saturday afternoon and the shop owner handed me the box with a flourish, and I nearly dropped it not realizing how heavy it would be. It's packed, but thats already been said.

Shop owner (whos an avid gamer too) expressed some curiosity so we cracked it open right there. He'd only ordered the one for me. Pulled out map after map, till even the shop owner's eyebrows went up and he said "wow! thats cool"

There was another guy in the shop so the books started getting passed around and some of the entries got read aloud. The ones that seemed to interest the other customers were the little oddball ones, like 2513, Vermin and Windmills and 3615, Decanter of Endless Sewage. Thes guys couldn't believe that most of the hexes had an entry of some sort.

So the consensus at the shop was this is definitely a cool product. And one that probably won't be imitated any time soon due to the volume of work involved.

So I left the shop and picked up a cuppa joe to go and headed to a park nearby to sit at a picnic table and really read this stuff.

The history is great. I admit I was a little leery of the science fiction overtones, but in the end I thought it explained a lot of things quite well. One place where some settings fall short is explaining just WHY there are so many holes in the ground to explore. This setting does it in spades.

The random ruins charts are awesome. Will definitely be using that too, even to just sit down one night with my dice and roll up some ruins.

As it goes, there's just too much stuff to take in all at once. Kinda tough to just sit and read it like a book, because it all seems to blur together after a chapter or two. Kinda like reading an encyclopedia. So I've been doing it a little at a time. And by the way, thats not a complaint. Just a comment on the sheer volume of info.

Every little bit is useful info...not much flavor text, which I like. Funny thing is, I find myself wondering If I could possibly ever USE all this stuff. I know for sure I'll never want for another campaign setting.

I began playing D&D in earnest in the late 80s, and never picked up much in the way of accessories until I started to DM in the early 90s...so I've never known the setting at all, until now.

This is hands down the best and most useful campaign setting I've ever seen. I don't know any of you guys. But I'd offer my hand in congratulations to everyone that contributed to this awesome product.

(Hoists his flask) to the Judges!
Cheers,
Trev

Got Mine

Got mine yesterday afternoon, from my FLGS. I've been doing a lot of reading this weekend . . .

Generally really cool stuff. Low fluff, high "that makes sense", and low weird-for-the-sake-of-weird counts. Which are all good in my game.

My only complaint is a whole lot of typos. Many are of the "only ran spellcheck, didn't get it proofread" type -- as in "on of the best things", that sort of thing. Others are mistakes with proper nouns of the "eh, skip the proper nouns in spellcheck" variety, especially between the map and the text, like "Dugway" on the map, "Irunway" in the text.

Two more things about the maps: color would be nice, so you can more easily tell water from forests. And it would be nice to have a better "overview" map of how things fit together.

Overall, it's well worth reading, though.

What I've been doing is just sitting down with a map (one of many!) in front of me and looking up all the hexes and names of places and reading about them little by little.

I'm still on the Elphand Lands....

Really? I've only noticed about two, and I'm nearly done with chapter III. That's pretty good in my book.

Anyone interested in my idea of a Wilderlands netbook?

Got it! (Well, my first copy.) :heh:

Man, but this thing's a monster, isn't it? Going to be interesting to look through, I can tell you that.

BTW, how do you folks pronounce "Wilderlands"? Obviously the name comes from the word "wild," but for some reason, I feel more natural pronouncing the name with the first syllable rhyming with "killed" or "build" instead of "wild." Am I the only one who does this?

I have always pronounced it to rhyme with "killed". I honestly never thought of pronouncing it like "child" until you mentioned it just now...

That's just it. It had never occurred to me either, until a few days ago when I said it the way I usually do--rhyming with "killed"--and a friend of mine corrected me, pronouncing it to rhyme with "child."

So I was just wondering if I've been pronouncing it wrong all this time, or if he was? (Not that I really intend to change either way; I still prefer my way of saying it. But I'd rather know.)
