Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

So, main points that have emerged from this thread:

I'd add one more caveat (which doesn't really apply to the original posters question)

Some characters have combat focussed Animal Companions as a significant part of what makes them competitive. In those cases you probably want to cut the player a little more slack on the social interactions etc.

For example, IIRC 3.0 had a Beastmaster Prestige class. It would kinda suck to be playing one of them and never get to use your animals :-).
