Great City Campaign Setting...not 4e...sucks

So, I can proclaim to the world that something I produce is usable with the d20 SRD and is OGL. I cannot say the same about material for 4E unless I am producing it under the auspices fo the GSL.

You can (afaik) use 4e just fine, but you what you can't say is 4th edition, dungeons and dragons (or whatever is the full name). Which matters little (according to some) as most people that the 3PP's target with their stuff know that 4e = 4e D&D

If you're saying

"Compatible with 4E"

I think you'd be safe, but you just cut your audience down considerably. 4E is a well known internet abreviation, but there is a alrger audience for D&D than those who peruse D&D forums.

If you're saying

"Compatible with Fourth Edition Dungeons and Dragons"

You're using a trademarked term (e.g. "Dungeons and Dragons") and would need to be licensed to use that trademark.

Wow. This thread is getting out of hand.... Everyone, just calm down, take a deep breath, and stop...

The 4E people are disappointed that this product won't have 4E compatable material (even though it's mostly neutral). I'm one of them. However, the 4E people also need to stop pushing the 3E people down a flight of stairs for sticking with their system. Everyone makes their own choice. Everyone has a system of preference. I'd love for 0One to make an add-on pack that has 4E conversions of the crunch (heck, Kenzer just put out a campaign setting 4E compatable without using the GSL) but if they don't, I understand.

The 3E people need to stop goading the 4E people with the snide comments like "Ha! Take that 4E!" or "I'm GLAD 4E isn't getting THIS product!" or whatnot. Some people (like me) burned out on 3E, and if 4E is the way to keep us in the hobby, let us play the system we want to play. Instead of bickering about the differences, let's try to find a happy medium where we embrace the simularities. Killing monsters and taking their stuff!

The 0E, BECMI, 1E, & 2E people are the smart ones because they're staying out of this crap. :D

On that note, I just spent a few bucks on 0One's blueprints to use for my 4E game.

Chris (can't we all just get along??)

Really? Can you explain this, then?

It's right there on the cover "for use with Fourth Edition Dungeons & Dragons". It is not a GSL product, afaik.

I can't and I am not a lawyer, I was merely repeating what has been said so many times on these boards (without any evidence to the contrary).

And there are a whole host of other settings like Planescape, Darksun, Ravenloft and others that are dead. I don't think that becoming the next Forgotten Realms is a reasonable expectation.

It could be. Ptolus, for example has quite the following. If it wasnt for the limited print run, it have a bigger one. People are still clamoring for folks to help'em find a copy.

As per the Great City flexibilty, I can say it can be used with multiple systems with little effort, since all the mechanichs (statblocks) are conveniently placed in a single chapter.

This is a good idea. As a D&D player who has zero interest in both 3E and 4E, this allows a product to be of maximum use to me. I hate paying for useless stats! Ideas I can use, stats are worthless to me.

I got my head bitten off here for telling people to snatch it up as fast as they could, since the copies were going to be gone before people knew it. :(

It's a great, great setting. And I really don't see much of an issue in converting it to other editions, since most of the NPCs in it are unlikely to be duking it out with the players, and the areas with the most combat, like the Dungeon, are left less detailed precisely so DMs can throw in whatever dungeon they like.

I'm going to stick Kobold Hall down near Delver's Square as a 4E trial run for my group later this summer.
