D&D 4E Great idea for 4E!

OK, here's what I've going to do: I'm going to take every ability for every class in the game and make a visual card representation that players can put in front of them. Whenever my players want to perform an action in combat they touch the picture card instead of describing what they're attempting to do!

What do you guys think?

I'd suggest a humour tag rather than general, but of course this isn't the least bit funny.

I'm serious. Quest cards are a great idea, then so is this.

And you shouldn't try to anger me by insulting my sense of humor.

Not that the mods will do anything since you're pro 4E, but... *shrug*.

Yes, this thread needs a humor tag.

Ooo, ooo! And you could have the picture cards be electronic picture cards called icons! And you could create a Multiplayer digital environment in which to use them! A Massive Multiplayer digital environment! Heck, if you get a few servers, you could even make it a Massive Multiplayer Online digital environment! This is the best idea for a pen and paper RPG ever!

To be honest though, ability cards work very well in SWSE. My players enjoy having their hand of abilities and always knowing what they can or can't do and exactly what the rules say about it right at their fingertips. We have multiple copies of some of them and I can see very well how having these things would be an asset to play.

Hell, I'll go ahead and be a blasphemous infidel and say I might even PAY to have such cards with mechanical effects on one side and evocative art on the other. Or quest cards with art on one side and flavor text on the other. I used Everway collectable cards to great effect back in the day and I'd actually enjoy seeing things like that again.

But not if they are like Changeling bunk cards. Those were lame. Pretty, but lame.

See, you had me right until the final sentence.

Because in my experience, the only thing that people say at the gaming table is "I move and attack" or "I cast x spell".

But having a note card for each one of your abilities, telling what it does, and how often you can use it, is useful. That way you don't have to look up what the damage of your Bloogalmoga ability is. This goes doubly true for spells.

This way the group can play while listening to their headphones. Pointing to the card doesn't interrupt the music.

They can say "I hit" or "I cast spell" without disrupting their headphones.
