D&D 4E Great idea for 4E!

This, actually, is such a good idea for my table that I'm going to go design a set now. Call me the fool of this thread or whatever, but I actually think this is a good idea.

No, I agree.

We recently had a new character join our group - a crusader - and I did up a set of Manuever cards for them. They were cool (especially given the design I used for them). I also did a set of cleric spell cards to aid the cleric player, who was struggling.

Now, the idea is spreading to the other players.

Having "basic actions" on cards? That's really worth investigating.

Cheers!

I actually really dig the condition cards I found and printed out from this site. I like spell cards (hand the obscure spell to the DM instead of a whole book) and cards for complex rules like some of the book of nine swords stuff. I do loathe the idea of quest cards, but that's a bit too serious and off topic for this thread.

I once played in a very gritty, low magic campaign where we had to track all of our items down to each individual ration on a 3x5 card. We even had a human leg card once...long story. I would not normally do that myself, but the DM (a very talented DM at that) had a method to his madness and it worked out well for what he wanted to accomplish-he wanted us to cherish the little things...like legs.

Anyway, it was a tool to track what we had on hand and what we used between us, if it wasn't on a card it didn't exist. If you wanted to use item x, if it wasn't in your stack, you were stuck.

Cards, whether they are for helping Players track a quest, ability, or spell, are not a bad thing by themselves-simply a tool.

I knew in the back of my head as soon as I read that Quest article that folks would start having a seizure over on the ol' ENworld boards (both pro and anti 4E).

Seize on folks, the clonic phase is coming soon!

Yeah, me too. I think it would be a great idea - no need to hunt through a rulebook, it's right there in front of you.

Have 3 piles, Swift-Standard-Full, with a slot in front of each. You place cards in front of its pile or into any open slot to the right.

Then another Immediate pile with its own slot unrelated to the others.

Just by looking you can see what you can do.

Or maybe you just have Cards with what action they are at the top. To use them, you "Pay" an action, and when you do the action, you turn it sideways, "Tapping" that action out.

What? WHAT? Why are you looking at me that way?

Horrible idea. Wanna play a card game? Go play a card game instead of turning D&D into a card game.
Wanna read a book? Go read a book instead of turning D&D into books with words in 'em. It's imagination. MAKE IT UP!

Obviously, it's not something everyone would need. However, I do know players who'd benefit from the reminders.

There's a note in the D&D Rules Compendium about how people tend to forget about fighting defensively. (It's a tactic I use a lot as a player when I get my rare chances to play). That might be another way to use it - ditto Power Attack. Not actually "actions" as such, but a quick way of keeping track of optional modifiers for actions.

Cheers!
