"Great session"? Wait, I'm confused...

So a player in my group said something on Saturday after our session that I don't understand. He said, "This was a great session!" I've been DMing for about 10 years now, and I've never heard these words uttered out of another players mouth before. What exactly did he mean by that? Is this what some call, a "compliment"? I've heard of such things, but I thought it was a myth. Was he just trying to get some bonus XP from me or something? Or maybe he stole something from my house, and that was great? Hmm, I'm unnerved by these words.

I got 2 new players in the last 6 months. This current group of players are great. I've been having a blast playing with them. It was nice to hear a compliment and that just inspires me to keep doing what I'm doing and try my best.

There's no real point to this thread other than to brag, since I'm used to just hearing complaints from players  Just let me have my moment please!

Compliments are rare. I'm been gaming with the same group for years and while I know they have fun and enjoy our gaming rarely do they say it without being prompted. Just don't over anialize it too much and start thinking that all those sessions where no one said a thing weren't great! :D

Oryan 77 levels up and takes another level in DM.

Compliments are always good. They are part of what turns the work of prep into something enjoyable.

Some of my favorites:

a) "Thanks for the game.": Always nice, but since I always make a point of telling my DM's this, doesn't really have the impact. Minimal professional courtsey in my opinion, though, one DM to another.
b) "Great Game!"
c) "OMG That's was !#$!#% awesome!"
d) "[Other player] was telling me how stoked he was for the next session."
e) "We're still talking about that game years later."

Keep up the good work. Don't get too addicted to it. As 'd' and 'e' suggest, sometimes you don't find out how much everyone appreciated the game until much later. Look at it this way, if they show up week after week and play like they want to, that's the best compliment a DM can recieve.

The best compliment I got was when after the game the players stood around and talked about how much they hated an NPC. Real venom, hatred...and it wasn't at all directed at me. That made me smile.

Find out what he liked most about the session, and do more of that.
He did blast an entire group of Wights single handedly with his Turn Undead ability. Maybe that's why it was a great session for him :p I'm kidding, it was a good session overall, everyone was getting into the roleplaying parts and having a blast.
You are either really awful and just got lucky or you run for a really tough crowd.

Haha, it could be a bit of both
People keep showing up to play, and I'm not that good looking, so they must be coming back because the game is fun.

Agreed. Any time the players express genuine attachment to any in-game element -- hatred of a foe, grudging respect for an NPC -- it makes my crusty black heart sing.

Cheers, -- N
