"Great session"? Wait, I'm confused...

The best compliment I got was when after the game the players stood around and talked about how much they hated an NPC. Real venom, hatred...and it wasn't at all directed at me. That made me smile.

That would be great. Never managed that before. I'm hoping for that in this campaign.

The closest I've come was players with actual infatuation/crushes on NPC's.

Agreed. Any time the players express genuine attachment to any in-game element -- hatred of a foe, grudging respect for an NPC -- it makes my crusty black heart sing.

Seriously.

That's what I'd probably consider the biggest compliment. I know there were a couple of NPC's in my old supers campaign that my players HATED. I loved that they were so vested in defeating them. It was like the players took the NPC's annoying quirks and trash talking to heart...

This.

Almost impossible to come by, but when they HATE your villains, that's when the DM wins D&D. ;)

I'd even take that a step further:

Hey players, TALK TO YOUR DM. Offer criticism. TELL me what you liked and what you didn't like. Don't just say "good game" and go home. Let me know. I WANT FEEDBACK.

Feed your DM.

Biggest compliment I ever heard (if I understood the story correctly) was years ago listening to Sepulchrave talking about his players standing on his doorstep in the pouring rain, on a game night canceled because of inclement weather, because they just HAD to find out how the next chapter of the story resolved. :D

I've had players compliment my session before, some compliment the campaign, and occasionally pay the highest compliment -- recall events from it years after they happened!
