Greater Dimension Door: How do you interpret?

As far as I can tell, your targets are the creatures you touch at casting time. The creatures you transport are those (who must be among the targets you chose) who are in linked contact when you bamf.

So option 2.

Say, Hyp, do you think you could spell out what option 2 is? Do you mean the multiple short hops for the duration? If so, would you say that is really worth a 5th level spell, or am I just not being imaginative enough?

I don't think there's any way to read the spell such that it allows 400+' travel. Dimension Door allows transport to 'any spot within range'. For DD, that's 400+'. For GDD, it's 'Touch'. So GDD allows transport to any spot you can touch.

In addition, it allows you to transfer your targets 25+'.

So yeah, multiple short hops for the duration... and only if you're all holding hands (or whatever).

-Hyp.

(fyi)

The original spell from Magic of Faerun (3.0):
Lutzaen's Frequent Jaunt
Transmutation (Teleportation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5ft./2 levels)
Duration: 1 round/2 levels
This spell functions like dimension door, except as noted above and that you can transfer yourself once per round as a move action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Well, that is certainly much better written....
and not something I would have taken for my only 5th level spell.
Thanks for the reference.

Yeah, for your only 5th level spell, it doesn't seem great. But it is certainly a nice defensive spell if you can't easily outrun your melee enemies (or they will grapple you at the first oppertunity). On the other hand, maybe a single Dimension Door would have been enough (and Teleport is clearly more advantagous to the group as a whole)

Yeah, "Greater Dimension Door" is a lousy name for this spell. It's not a "greater" version of dimension door. It's a different spell.
