[Waaaay OT] Best Cover Tunes Ever?

Ok, so it occured to me that there are some cover songs out there that have essentially become the mainstay of that song. That is if you asked someone who played the song, you get the performers of a cover version. Examples:

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing
Nirvana - Man who sold the world
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Nine Inch Nails - Physical (Adam Ant now does the NIN version in concert...)

What are some others that do this?

Now there are a lot of interesting ones out there like:

The Ramones - Its a Wonderful World
KMFDM - Mysterious Ways
Siddy Bar - Gin and Juice
Superfast - Boyz-N-the Hood
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child of Mine
Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow - Picture
Dave Matthews - All Along The Watchtower, Gin and Juice, numerous others
Metallica - Anything on Garage Days Re-Revisited or Garage Inc.
Iron Maiden - Communication Breakdown.
Bad Religion - 21st Century Digital Boy

However- inter4esting ones are not what I am looking for, (I might do those later) I am looking for the ones where the original is nearly forgotten...

I essentially want to make a comp of these.

Din't know (or maybe I forgot) about the OT Forum. I did look for one but I could not find it. I will look again. Cold someone move this there...

Though it would be nice to get the larger group on this, Should I repost or get a mod to move it...

Also, I thought the media section had to do with geekier stuff...

Oh well.

Aaron.

How about "Hazy Shade of Winter" or possibly "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" with the superior original bassline.

I can only assume you mean respective tunes from the Bangles, and Guns and Roses?

Or is that saying that the GnR version is NOT the one?

And to be clear I am looking for the covers, not the originals. I want to make a CD of covers that most people consider the originals if they are not paying attention.

I wish Devo's Head Like a Hole, was a little more popular. That will have to go on the interesting cover cd. As will a rockabilly version of Ace of Spades by Union Avenue. I also heard that there is a bluegrass/rockabilly version of the Gin and Juice by the gourds....

But GnRs live and Let Die I think would be a candidate...

No, no- you nailed it. That was stupid on my part to omit the bands that covered said tracks. Namely, the originals were Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan.
