Greatest Cover Tunes Ever

I heard a sort of punk version of the "I will walk 500 miles" song.
"500 Miles", originally by the Proclaimers (IIRC), covered by Down By Law. i like the Down By Law version better. :)

i've heard the Bauhaus cover of "Ziggy Stardust" more often than the original Bowie version.

the Devo cover of "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction" is a bit weird, but grows on you after a while...

other people have already mentioned Me First & the Gimme Gimmes and Save Ferris; both bands do lots of awesome covers.

to get really old school, Bobby Darin's cover of "Mack the Knife" is a lot more widely known than the original Louis Armstrong English version, or the original German version from the Threepenny Opera.

The Monkees' "I'm A Believer" was originally a Neil Diamond song.

and speaking of "Ring of Fire," Social Distortion does a great cover of that song.

(edit) oh another one: Rod Stewart's cover of "Downtown Train" is a lot better known than the original version. (Tom Waite, IIRC?)

If this is still referring to Hazy Shade of Winter, am I wrong in thinking the original was by the Mama's and the Papa's? Or am I just remembering my parents record collection?

Okay, I looked it up, written by Paul Simon, so it must have been Simon & Garfunkel. Ah well.... I thought I was so smart.

Yup. I've got both the S&G and Bangles versions (CD for S&G, cassette, CD, and music video for Bangles).

I like the original a lot. Very cool. But I'm a huge Bangles fan, and I'm not afraid to admit it, and I adore their cover :)

Ehh, maybe I'm just not hip enough, but those are the only one's I'd pick based on your criteria.

I might add, though, UB40 "Red, Red Wine" and Depeche Mode "Route 66." Maybe Pet Shop Boys "Always on My Mind" while you're at it.

good call on the Red Red wine and the route 66. I know the NIN, Cash, Vaughn, Hendrix, and Nivana songs are essentailly old standbys now. Some of the others (not including the ones you listed) are perhaps generational. But Red red Wine and Route 66 get added to the list for sure.

Well, don't forget the cover that sounds absolutely nothing like the original but is still really cool, A Perfect Circle's "The Nurse Who Loved Me". Who did that one? Any takers?

Wasn't the original by Failure? I could be wrong...

In any case, I like the APC version a lot. Reminds me of Silent Hill.

How about Madonna's American Pie? Just kidding! (Shields herself from garbage being thrown)
Some covers I thought of: Urge Overkill's Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon
The Ramones Needles and Pins
Proud Mary...I think that CCR or Ike and Tina did it originally, then the other covered it. I'm just not sure of the order.
Suzie Q. I'm pretty sure that I read that CCR covered this
Phil Collins Groovy Kind of Love
Deep Purple Hush
Roy Orbison & k.d. lang Crying
Linda Ronstadt Blue Bayou
Chili Peppers Higher Ground
Some covers that haven't eclipsed the originals,(or a cover of the original) but are still pretty darn good
Marilyn Manson Sweet Dreams
Ataris Boys of Summer
Blink 182 Phantom of the Opera
Nirvana Where did You Sleep Last Night? Love Buzz Lake of Fire
Tori Amos Landslide Somewhere over the Rainbow Angie Thank You Smells Like Teen Spirit (well, it's a cover anyway)
Pearl Jam Leavin' Here You've got to Hide Your Love Away (okay, that one was just Eddie) Grimmie Out of Control Rockin' In the Free World, Behind Blue Eyes Smells like Teen Spirit Soldier of love
u2 Satellite of Love Helter Skelter Pop Musik
Smash Mouth I'm a Believer
Kula Shaker Hush
Ewan McGregor Your Song (it's interesting anyway)
Superfan Superstar
Type O Negative Summer Breeze
Limp Bizkit Faith
Megadeth Paranoid
Shades Apart Tainted Love
UB40 The Way You Do the Things You Do
Ugly Kid Joe Cat's in the Cradle
Hmmm...I'm tapped for now
