Greatest Cover Tunes Ever

After some thought, Diamond Dave's "Just a Gigilo" will be added to the list. California Girls is good but doesn't supplant.

What I think I am going to do is make a list and then make a CD based on the list that has what I like to listen to on it. That way I am not turning my back on Whitney and Dolly.

Ok So here is the list as it stands now. I left out Some of the more Folksy stuff simply because it does not seem to me that they are as prevalent as they might have once been. This has incluided Peter Paul and Marys "Blowin in the wind" The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" "Turn Turn Turn" the james Taylor suggestion, and Whitney Houston's take on "I will Always love you" just cause I have not heard it in a while, which means Dolly Might come back as the definaitive version. So with out further Ado the list as it now stands:

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing
Nirvana - Man who sold the world
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Nine Inch Nails - Physical
The Bangles- Hazy Shade of Winter
Guns and Roses - Knockin on Heavens Door
Run DMC - Walk this way
Van Halen - Girl You Really Got Me
Van Morrison - Wild Night
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss
Pearl Jam - Crazy Mary
Sublime - Smoke Two Joints
Kim Wilde - Hangin On
The Beatles - Twist and Shout
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Johnny Cash - Hurt
David Lee Roth - Just a Gigilo
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Gwen Stephani - Its my Life (what the hell...)
UB 40 - Can't Help Falling in Love
Beastie Boys - Slow and Low
Beastie Boys - Root Down

I thinik this will all fit on a CD...

Better is a relative term, I am looking for covers that rather than be better, have supplanted the original in a large portion of the populations consciousness. So while I have never heard of Nevermore, I have heard David Lee Roth's take on "Just a Gigilo" numerous times, more than the times I have heard the original. Thus it goes even though many would find it to be the lesser work ITOs.

Well, don't forget the cover that sounds absolutely nothing like the original but is still really cool, A Perfect Circle's "The Nurse Who Loved Me". Who did that one? Any takers?

String Cheese Incident's version of "Walk This Way". You haven't lived until you hear Aerosmith covered as something approaching bluegrass.

And lest we forget that most famous of covers, Taco's "Putting On the Ritz"! Well, uhh, yeah. It was cool back in 1981... no, I take that back. It wasn't.

BTW, "Smoke Two Joints" was done by The Toyes.

Ehh, maybe I'm just not hip enough, but those are the only one's I'd pick based on your criteria.

I might add, though, UB40 "Red, Red Wine" and Depeche Mode "Route 66." Maybe Pet Shop Boys "Always on My Mind" while you're at it.
