Greatest Hero of All Time (Preliminary Research before Poll)

Ah-hah. Here in lies my problem.

WHAT IF THE GUY FAILS?

What about the Informant who's too late to stop the bomb?
BUT had every intention of sacrificing himself if necessary?

What about the Secret Service guy who's just ONE SECOND too late to take the bullet?

Is a Martyr the same as a Hero?

And is the Secret Service guy who was ONE SECOND too late to take the bullet ANY LESS HEROIC than the Secret Service guy who DID TAKE THE BULLET?

Well, they all died trying. Most likely they will be unsung heroes, but heroes nonetheless. Almost all heroes have failed at one point or another. It is part of their mortality and it is part of their being heroes. What makes them heroes is that in the end they are still trying.

"Are you still trying to win? I think you have an overdeveloped sense of vengance." -The six fingered man

Even Drizzt and Bond fail a little bit, but never catastrophicly. Which makes them boreing in certain respects.

Honor Harrington!!

Anyone who has not read the David Weber, "Honor Harrington" novels is definately depriving themselves of the best Space Opera Sci-Fi of our times.

Alright, the thread, yet again exceeded my excpectation's I have a large list of nominees. It is ogign to take awhile to sort through the list. I will tell you right now, nominee's who were listed 2-3 times will probally be makign it to the list by default, unless the list is still to large. I am aiming to make a 25 person list.

The poll posted by next Tuesday at the very latest. Any nomoniees after this post will be ignored. (Simply because there is such a long list)Thanks for the assitance in the pre-liminary round.

I think I saw it mentioned before, but I just gotta say TEDDY ROOSEVELT! is my choice for RL hero.

He was the ultimate jack of all trades, and master of quite a few.
A writer, warrior, statesman, athlete, naturalist, philosopher, hunter, aristocrat....etc. etc.

He definetely had the Dao of Steve (movie reference)

As for fictional character? Gotta go with Tanis Half-Elven. I'm not that big a DL fan, but I gotta give respect to the portrayal of this character. He went through a lot and always managed to pull himself and everybody through it.

Hero's are defined by a people in a specific time. The poeple you have named (rl) were not hero's until recognised. George washington was branded traitor by the British. Einstein flunked forth grade math. Joan of Arc was called a witch and burned at the stake.

Only in hindsight can we appreciate the heroic deeds, and recognise them as heros. But in 1000 years, will the people still feel the same way?

But back on topic:
I can't believe that after so many lists that included people like frodo, batman, and other people that are no more than normal people who extraordinary things, you guys all failed to mention the greatest hero of all time, the defender of the Universe... that is right, I am talking about ...
