So, last night I was heading to work (night work is teh suck) when my eye was caught by something bright. I looked up - a greenish fiery thing, looked for all the world like a flare or one of the meteors in the beginning of The Day of the Triffids - came falling down out of the sky. I've been patiently combing the local news stations, etc. looking for what happened, but nada...

What you saw is actually called a fireball meteor (or a bolide by some people). Just one of those random natural events when a meteor is a bit brighter than usual. My wife and I had the luck to see one on our honeymoon, streaking over Verona. Very memorable indeed.
