And for those who don't like Hal back, it could be worse...

It could be G'nort...
Darn. I was hoping for Mr. Mxyzptlk to be the new GL. :p

Very appropriate for you to compare Hal to Tom Cruise. I never did like both.

Oh, he's already back in Formerly Known as the Justice League.

Yep. Shipped off to become the leader (and only member) of the Superbuddies of Antarctica.

Where Hal's return is concerned, I'm personally eager to see him come back. I got into comics after Hal Jordan/Parallax bit the dust, and all the Green Lantern comics I've read have been about Kyle. I've really gotten to like Kyle, and look forward to seeing him stick around, but I'd also like to see Hal in action as GL. The only stories I've read with Hal Jordan were, unfortunately, seriously wooden tales from the early Silver Age.

However, it is my opinion that Alan Scott (who, as it happens, has gone back to using his magic ring after events in JSA lost him the inate power of the Starheart) is the one true Green Lantern. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Had Hal passed away in similar circumstances (as a hero instead of turning into a villain and remaining around), Kyle would have suffered of less backlash...

Exactly. And then to make matters worse, after killing off a respected iconic hero, the new guy gets the ring by being in the wrong place at the right time. Hell, ANYBODY could've been the new GL - which goes against 30+ years of GL continuity. I mean couldn't Ganthet have looked around a little before unloading the ring?

Hal deserved better IMO.

I think Ganthet had the idea that logical ration choice had brought them to the point where they were: the greatest of the people they had chosen had just got nuts and killed everyone so... why not? How could it get worse than it already was?

Of course this was retconned because later it was shown that Ganthet offered the Ring to Guy Gardner first, who refused it. I think he offered it to someone else as well, perhaps John, before deciding to give it to the first person he encountered.

It could have been anyone. It was just seconds away from being Kyle's drunk buddy from art school. Now, I wish we'd see some 'What If...?' style stories about that.

One of the best Hal Jordan stories was during Crisis, when he quit the corps and had to lead an assault against the moon of Qward wearing (iirc) a yellow ring. During that story, Hal's best friend, the bird-faced Tomar-Re, was killed and in the end Tomar gave his ring to Hal, who returned to the Corps and the other Green Lanterns projected an infinity symbol over him (and Tomar-Re), proclaiming "Once a Green Lantern, Always a Green Lantern".

Plus, that oath is just too cool! "In brightest day..."

Yeah. Over in the short-lived John Stewart title 'Green Lantern Mosaic'.

I think I'm the only guy on Earth who actually liked that title. It was cancelled too early IMO.

Possibly, but it still is a monumentally irresponsible maneuver. Here Ganthet has one of the most powerful pieces of jewelry in the universe - more powerful than Hal Jordan's ring - and he just gives it away to some guy on the street. No clue to his background, no training, no mission, nothing. "Hey buddy... here, take this ring. What? <sigh> Yes, I'm a blue dwarf in a red dress. Nevermind that now. Just take this. You can split atoms with it and fly around the universe. Oh... wait a sec. You're good, right? You are? Great. Thanks. See Ya!"

Ganthet was still a Guardian. If he was worried about creating another Hal Jordan, giving a ring to Kyle Rayner sight unseen was not the way to prevent it. If that was the case the Guardians should consider the GL Corps a failure and design version 2.0 of the Manhunters. Of course, YMMV. ;)
