Green Ronin and Super Unicorn Team Up for Mutants & Masterminds

I'm an old time Shadowrun fan so I'm looking forward to seeing Steve Kenson's work in this.

One question: will this be a d20 logoed project or just OGL? If you've got a new point-based character construction system that should be pretty exciting.

We're weighing our options on that one. Steve has certainly done enough cool work that the game could certainly be done as OGL without the D20 logo, though our intention going in was always to make it a D20 project.

We won't make a final decision on the branding until Super Unicorn is completely through with their development, but it's been brought up more than once that it would be easy enough to make Mutants & Masterminds a complete, stand-alone OGL game. Steve did a great job.

If he's come up with a new character construction system I'd be rather stoked to see it in print, but I'd also settle for a PDF download if losing the logo brought on too much financial risk.

Just to pimp the potential character construction system a bit more: I bet being the first to market with a fully developed point based character making system fully comptabile with "the world's number one tabletop roleplaying game" would generate mondo sales, guarantee an Enny nomination, and have a good shot in the Origins awards. :D

Hmmm...perhaps.

I guess we'll have to see when Silver Age Sentinels d20 is released at GenCon in a few weeks. Not that we really care about awards -- we just want to produce the best d20 superhero RPG that we can.

Oh, c'mon Mark, RPGnet is awash with people singing the praises of SAS. Can't you let someone say something nice about my upcoming game, too?

:p

Of course I encourage people to say nice things and check out M&M when it comes out, Nik. I know I'll be picking up a copy right away if our local game store carries it (otherwise, I'll probably have to wait until I go to Toronto or a game con).

I just wouldn't want the internet to be the source of incorrect facts.

I know, I know ... it's rare, but it ocassionally does happen. ;)

Fair enough. What "incorrect facts" were you trying to rebut?

Simply the implication that M&M would bring the first point-based power creation system for d20 to market. I'm sure that Steve's power system will be innovative, flexible, and creative. Many of our customers have commented how much they liked Chapters 5 and 6 of SAS -- chapters written by Steve -- so I'm sure he'll do great work for M&M too. Since M&M is premiering in October (if the promotional material I have read is correct), however, it won't be the first to market.

That's was what my post was intended to clarify.

Actually, what I was commenting on was a point based character creation system. You can't include that without losing use of the logo or playing dangerously fast and loose with the d20 system trademark license. Anyway, it sounded to me like Steve Kenson might have such a thing floating around on his hard drive and that Green Ronin was contemplating dumping the d20 logo so that they could include it in their book.

I'll be checking out SaS, prolly both versions, anyway though...

Ahh, I see the source of the confusion.

When 2WS-Steve said 'I bet being the first to market with a fully developed point based character making system fully comptabile with "the world's number one tabletop roleplaying game"' I believe he was talking about Mutants & Masterminds coming out as an OGL product with a full character creation and character advancement system, aspects that a product carrying the D20 logo isn't allowed to include.

If we were to go "all the way" with Mutants & Masterminds, I think we'd be considered first to market for that kind of game.
