Grell...what book is it in?

I agree. In fact, I once wrote an "Ecology of the Grick" article with that as a main feature, but then Dragon went to the "fictionless" format and it was rejected.

But I've always liked grells. (Or maybe I should say "grell" - I noticed in Lords of Madness that the plural of "grell" is now "grell." I can't recall offhand if that was always the case.)

Maybe that's what we need, more monsters that teach them game.
I recall reading a post from Monte Cook that said some monsters were included in the MM for just that purpose. It was in a thread about the Phantom Fungus, which he said was mostly there to provide a low-level monster with invisibility (and being a plant, allowing the druid to use his plant-spells).

You say your players aren't familiar with the grapple rules? Throw a few grell at them and they'll get familiar pretty quick.

In the first module of the Adventure Path (Life's Bazaar), the party (which had some players new to 3ed) fought a choker and a grell. It didn't take them long to realize getting grappled was extremely BAD. :]

Any chance of seeing this article appear in the Story Hour forum?

Whee! More abberation goodness! For whatever reason, the Grick has always had a special place in my heart, probably because a pair of gricks were the first metal minis I painted, and because they're just so much fun to drop on top of spelunking low-level PCs. :) There's a great scene in one of the Necromancer Games modules where the players walk into a cave, and only when they look up do they notice the writhing nest of tentacles and beaks on the ceiling!

I'll see what I can do. ;) Check it out, oh, say, by tomorrow afternoon?

just remember, you'll probably have to delete it later if the opportunity ever comes up again to use it in Dragon... IF, that is. :)
