Grell...what book is it in?

I recall reading a post from Monte Cook that said some monsters were included in the MM for just that purpose. It was in a thread about the Phantom Fungus, which he said was mostly there to provide a low-level monster with invisibility (and being a plant, allowing the druid to use his plant-spells).

Ethereal Marauder, for one.

My unpublished "Ecology of the Grick" (which demonstrates genetic ties to the grell) has been posted over in the Story Hour forum. You can find it here:

You are the dude of ecology articles. When they dropped your format, they did a diservice to many of the readers.

Why don't I see your name in the fantasy section of Borders? Seriously.

Originally, it was in the 1st edition AD&D Fiend Folio.
While it's true that the first book to feature grells was the 1E FF, that wasn't their first appearance. Grells made their debut in White Dwarf #12. They were invented by Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Games Workshop.

Spurred by this thread, I looked up the grell again in my old FF. I used to love that full-page illustration of the monster attacking a party of adventurers. I used the monster a couple times in my old AD&D1 campaigns.

I saw the D&D3 grell in the MMII (and in the RttTEE), and noticed they had "upgraded" it with some paralyzation powers. Didn't have that in the original AD&D1 version. Then I turned the page and found an extra couple paragraphs for the grell on the page after the full-page illo. What?! All these years I didn't know about this.

The grell description stops with a paragraph end, then there is the full-page illo. I never knew there was more to the monster after that illo. After about 25 years, I have finally noticed this.
