I still use the '83 set extensively, and it details the setup of my campaign better than the LGG, but the LGG has more material in it that inspires me - especially the write-ups of the deities!

I reread (well, skimmed, anyways) the '83 set and the '80 folio a while ago, but since then it's been LGG all the way. THe book's getting worn, and I think it's out of print now. Aiee!

Something I've been wondering about: did TSR ever do any "Faiths & Avatars"-style writeups for the Greyhawk gods? If so, what product(s) were they in?

I've been considering some of those Greyhawk ESDs, mostly for that reason.

As long as I'm here and asking tangential questions: the Scarlet Brotherhood supplement -- good, bad, indifferent? Is it worth buying as an ESD?

I'm not really sure of the Faiths & Avatars write-up format...

More detailed information about Greyhawk deities, avatars & priesthoods may be found in the 1E/2E hardback book Greyhawk Adventures, and in the 3E Deities and Demigods, although in neither case to a huge amount of detail.

Dragon Magazine also had a write up of the stats of four of the deities in a recent issue, IIRC. (Including Iuz. ;))

Apart from that, I think there are bits here and there.

Perhaps Erik or some other Greyhawk sage could be able to answer your question better than I can.

Cheers!

I really liked it, and I got the paper version. Never actually got involved in the Brotherhood directly in any games I've played though. Nice to see some detail to the Amedio Jungle.

The Slavers sourcebook is pretty good also I thought...well, aside from what they did with Turrosh Mak perhaps.

Actually, all the stuff from TAB on was pretty good. Too bad it didn't continue.

Some gods were detailed in some of the last pre-3e issues of Dragon IIRC.

EDIT: Yep. #263. Atroa, Delleb and Kurell are detailed.

Correct. I voted the 83oxed set, which was gracefully given to me by my brother in law as a christmas present a few years ago.

In other words: a good christmas present... ;)

(My brother bought me UK1: Beyond the Crystal Cave a few years ago... I was very happy.)

Arrggghhh!!! Dragon 263!!!

I have the Dragon Magazine Archive CD-ROMs (so issues 1-250), but I restarted collecting with 274; so that happens to be one of the 23 issues I don't have access to. Oh well - I guess I just have to make it up for my campaign. :)

I'm glad to see quite a few votes for the '83 set - it's really great.

Cheers!

Although I have nearly all the Greyhawk books and sets (including the 1980 set and many of the modules), I like the 'From the Ashes' set best. LGG seemed to more 'reset' Greyhawk back to pre-2nd edition times, with only a few minor changes to the campaign world.

With the Ashes set, you have it easily set up so you could do a 'Lord of the Rings' type campaign against power forces of darkness. In the LGG, most of the major evils in the world are in retreat, with the Great Kingdom no longer a potent threat. The 'Crook of Rao' seemed to me to be a 'Dues Ex Machina' device to put things back to the way they were, and that sucked a lot of drama out of the setting.

Apparently it was the first of a series. Dunno which other issues were in the series though.

#262 also has an excellent article by Roger Moore detailing Elmshire.
