Grim Tales Character Generator

My site was already in straight HTML when learned about XHTML - and from what I've read, I'm not ready or willing to switch to a new markup language that major browser have issues with.

Yeah, that's what I meant by, "when it's done, we can display it however we want." To each his own in what he wants to use for the web display. It's the fact that it will be available that's important.

As a note, initial SRD will be less in the vein of WotC .rtf SRD, and more like the Hypertext SRD at d20SRD.org, as was Ben's request.

At a later time, if demand is high (and Ben OKs the idea) there could easily come an offline version, in a plain-text or RTF format. But for now, the data is all sorted in a database and HTML-formatted for the web by PHP.

That sounds perfect!! Now I'm even more excited.

Forgive my intrusion, and feel free not to answer if you don't want to, but what database are you using, and will you make the data tables available when you are done?

I have no problem answering (after all, (A) I trust my admin's security setup and, (B) stealing free data would be silly) - we're using PostgreSQL version 7.

As to making that data available (in SQL format, I presume) - that would have to be on a case by case basis. I'd hear any requests, if nothing else. I have put a fair bit of work into them, and I might discuss with Ben (and the Bad Axe lawyers) about making the data tables comercially available, depening on the nature of the request.

I don't know how much use the raw data would be, however - I've had to make some compromises regarding data entry, some which I'm already regretting. (IE entering HTML formatting code into data - great for PHP, bad for DOM manipulation). If as a programmer you have anythoughts on that particular plight, I'd love to hear it. (Esp. if you know JScript & DOM well)

I understood that.

I SHOULDN'T have understood it, but I did.

English, man! I can't understand your crazy moon-man language!

(I've always wanted an opportunity to say that.) :D

This is better and better! (At work we use postgresql exlusively.)

Hey, whatever you are comfortable with. I would just be interested in playing with it. Not for reproducing for anyone else.

Without seeing the code and data in action I'm not sure what help I could be. And, no, I'm not trying to twist your arm. :)

Wow, great news all over this thread! Especially the image of Henry in a cheerleader's outfit.

Kirin'Tor, I have a bit of JScript/PHP/Dom/othercrap experience, so once you've got a beta test version ready, let me know and I'll have a look. But HTML in the db isn't NECESSARILY a bad thing. I'm thinking of, say, Skill descriptions, where readability is vastly improved if you can bold things or create sub-headings and whatnot. Obviously for some data it's superior to have it unformatted, but not necessarily all of it.

Anyway, I would be happy to take this puppy for a test drive anytime you want a pair of eyes to look at it. I did software QA for six years, so I can probably provide you with useful input.

Thanksgiving Bump...

Good afternoon, Kirin'Tor,

Just wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, and I hope that, in and amidst all the turkey and family and stuff, you are at least able to find a few spare moments to tinker with GT SRD. ;)

Seriously, enjoy the holiday, and we look forward to this being out before the end of the year. No rush... take your time... we really appreciate you doing this for the community... there's no hurry... I promise, I won't be checking every day for an update or anything... well, maybe... okay, who am I foolin'? Of Course, I'll be checking every day for an update... ;)

Take care, my friend,
Flynn

BTW, gratuitous bump...

I've decided to use this holiday to give 'Thanks' to all the GT fans who await the SRD, so I've now got a much better, more public place where I will be posting the little day-to-day updates. I've started a Blog:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/kirintor/

Like any blog, it will wind up with random personal notes in it, but I will be using it as a development log for my site as well. All posts will be public, so you don't nedd to sign up at LJ to read anything (unless you want to/have, then feel free to add a friend :-))

The first post was my attempt at a clever introduction (family guy fans rejoice, and the second is a real introduction. I acutally haven't gotten any real stuff doneyet this week, so no further posts have been made.

I'll still keep my eye on this thread, but I think that makes a much better central loction for things. All things will be added there, from teh mundane (I entered more skills) to the uselessly geeky (I think I might try to upgrade PHP so I can use the new SimpleXML commands of 5.0) All sorted, of coruse.
