Grim Tales in Play?

Hey there,

Sooooo...how would I use GT in conjunction with normal D20? I am biased against D20 Modern and wouldn't mind using GT for a plup-style campaign, but I don't want to have to pick up a copy of D20M (or the Pocket Modern Handbook for that matter) just to use the GT toolkit. Any ideas?

I suggest that you get a look at my review (see link in my signature); IMO you don't need to pick-up d20 modern if you intend to use Grim Tales. However, Grim Tales don't provide any stats of firearms or equipment, thus for doing something "modern" you will have either to use some other book or make by yourself.

You won't need d20 Modern if you have access to other sources of Spells, Vehicles, and Equipment.

Other than that, Grim Tales is pretty well inclusive.

Of course, you could always use the rules provided in Grim Tales to generate your own equipment.

MY suggestion would be to buy Grim Tales from Badaxe Games. It has pretty much the entire GT toolkit in a complete game system -- no other rules required.

If you want d20 Modern for FREE try

And there you go. Free Modern SRD, just for you. No, no, there's no need to thank me. I do it for the love.

MDT Question...

Wulf,

Have a question about MDT (Massive Damage Threshold) implementation...well, a couple of questions ;)

(1) On pp. 95, it indicates that a failure of the DC 15 Fort Save drops the character to -1 and dying...glancing over at the column to the left, what if the character has CON bonus? How would you handle someone with a 16 CON (+3 mod)? Do they drop to -3 or do they drop to -1 and become disabled?

(2) If you use the most forgiving option (1 skull), do you count temp magical effects such as Shield, Mage Armor and Shield of Faith?

Thanks,

I'm talking out of my ass for a moment, without access to my rules to check myself, so bear with me.

Dying is a condition. You can be at -1 and dying, even with a Con bonus.

Under normal circumstances, you don't start dying until you hit (-CON mod), but that doesn't mean you can't be dying unless you are in that range, just the same as you can be disabled, unconscious, staggered, sickened, etc. irrespective of hp.

Yes, anything that adds armor, I'd add into the MAS.

Hey Turanil,

Thanks. Good review, very helpful. In fact, thanks all. As far as firearms stats, I got at least two other books I could use for that. In fact, I'm thinking that GT would be a good combination with either Forbidden Kingdoms or Adventure! Whaddya think?

Personally, I just bought a good (non-gaming) reference book on Guns-- probably a Jane's edition, I wouldn't swear to it-- that has hundreds of guns with muzzle velocities, magazine capacities, and ammunition caliber. Using the rules in GT, "converting" a real world firearm takes about... eh, 3 seconds. ;)

Hey Wulf,

Of course, after getting hyped about GT, hope you won't be hurt that it's #3 on my "must buy" list after the M&M Annual and The Algernon Files supplements for my first D20 love, M&M.

This is based on my own readings. The Algernon Files are okay. You'd be better off going, in your list, M&M Annual and then Grim Tales, then Algernon Files.
