[Grim Tales] Spell lists?

Low-magic and min/maxing don't really mix. Low-magic is more about the unknown and discovery. If your players can't get over that, regardless of the game or ruleset you are using, pushing a low-magic game on them is a losing battle (unfortunately). You really need to have a discussion about it with them. If they are relying on your to DM (and put the time and effort into it), then they should at least be willing to give it a try. If not, tell someone else to DM.

I had a similar situation with one of the groups I'm in. I've been talking about it for a while so I've slowly introduced them to some of the concepts. Some of the first questions are "What if I want to play a spellcaster?" Well, there are no spellcasters. You have wait and see what you find.

It's sort of like, you want to play soccer, and they all want to play football.

And they're asking you at what point they'll be allowed to pick up the ball with their hands and knock the crap out of each other.

Set the boundaries now.

Tell them that there is no magic in your campaign. Not low magic, NO MAGIC.

And the first time some bugaboo casts a spell at them, and they say, "I thought you said there was no magic!" you just say, "Your character has never seen anything like it before. Maybe it has something to do with that black book on the altar..."

yah I like games like that... but the players won't

so I guess I will have to do "medium magic" and find a happy place for them to slowly meld into grim tales.

trust me, I understand where you are coming from as a player, designer and DM but I know my players and they are very stuck in their ways, but they "want" to try something different, but I think in reality they aren't "comfortable" trying something "too" different.

thanks for the advice I will have to tread this one alone it seems :)
