[Grim Tales] Spellcasting Questions

Henry said:
Thanks, Heap. 29 difference says it's = 6 actions, so I was assuming that meant 6 rounds of time (36 seconds, what have you). And I guess I'll have to get with Old One about preparing / memorizing, since I'm not sure how that's done in this system. In Grim Tales, you know a spell and you can cast it till you're dead or drained, and taking longer to cast it voluntarily will lower your caster check. But the main thing I wanted to cement is if my casting time is set in stone based on aptitude and casting DC. If there's a memorization rule, I will definitely be prepping some nastier things.

One last question: What would be the drain for these things, and why?

Henry,

6 Actions = 3 rounds of full-time casting. I just posted some detailed info in our NC Game Day thread to your questions, but the drain is 1d8 + (final DC/5, round down).

Okay, that spell would be THREE rounds ... for the purposes of spellcasting (and only spellcasting) two standard actions makes a single round of casting.

You are able to prepare a number of spells each day equal to your Int bonus. If you take damage during the course of the day you have to make concentration checks or possibly lose those spells. If you spend a point of spell energy after storing the spells, you won't have to make concentration checks if you take damage.

The drain for pretty much every spell is equal to 1d8. If you augment the spell in any way you then ALSO take the DC / 5 in additional drain. So that augmented swift action spell is 1d8 + 3. The bigger spell is 1d8 + 9.

Remember that Spell Energy reduces that damage you take, so with 5 points you'll be taking considerably less, but still some. I've found that's usually the least of your worries. :) Trying to find a safe spot to stand and chant for 3 rounds is much more pressing.

Just wanted to chime in to let you know that I've been following this thread, and cut-n-pasting like mad to keep some of these ideas for my own use if/when I get a Grim Tales game going.

Thanks for the open hashing out of your conversions of the BCCS spellcasting into Grim Tales terms.

Character looks good. :)

I like hashing it out. Heck, I couldn't get the book for something like two months, so for the first five sessions or so we were using my reverse-engineered version of it.

Heaven help me - I've been playing around with this system for the past few days, and liking it so much, that I just ordered the Black Company Book off the internet.

I don't know if I get to use it in my home games, but I'll probably use it at a Gameday down the road, for sure. :)
