The much-praised mini-game from Fantasy Flight Games will be getting the $40 full treatment rulebook, but as it stated in the web page linked above, it will be non-d20. I ask the good gentles of Fantasy Flight, why?

Perhaps it is so they can have character generation, xp, and advancement rules in the book and make it a complete game on its own that does not require the PH.

Yeah, but it sounds like it's not going to use the d20 system at all -- if they just wanted to have chargen, xp, and advancement, they could have made it OGL and labelled it as such in that announcement. Interesting news.

I agree with Nick. Not only they did advertised it as an OGL game but also they made very clear that it is not a d20 game. Also, their latest release, Firebor included a new system and I read here at ENWorld that FFG management people were not pleased with the d20/OGL market and that they were going to move their resources to systems they control.

I am curious. I heard good things about Grimm and I like to read about new systems.

On the FFG forums Christian T. Petersen (the CEO, I think) said:

"Yes we are indeed producing a one-shot large (256 book) for the delicious GRIMM. The system will be a new house-system (elegant, fast, and with detail) that will follow many of our upcoming one-shot RPG books. "

I think this is a great idea. d20 doesn't really work for Grimm. They had to completely redefine the classes and limit them to 6 levels. THe assumption of magical items, really doesn't fit, and many of the rother rules heavy areas of d20 also don't fit as well. D20 is a good system for what it does, but it clearly is not going going to be the best system for all games. So, it is very good that they recogonized this ahead of time.

In any case, I hope that FFG doesn't completely abandon the d20/OGL market, as they're one of the few third party companies I buy regularly and without regret. In any case, I'll have to check out this edition of Grimm (it's one of my favorite implementations of the d20 system, even if, as Crothian points out, it has its issues).

On this note, Midnight continues to be a fan favorite, so you'd better believe we will continue to support it! Look for Forge of Shadow by Christmas, Midnight 2nd Edition by summer of next year, and at least several more setting/crunch books for the campaign.

As for Grimm, a bunch of you thus far have spake the truth ;) . Grimm was great fun to work on, and is cool for a few sessions, but the fans that really love it have been asking us to support longer-term campaigns for it. The d20 version of Grimm isn't really made for a long-term campaign, though, and of all the Horizon books, Grimm seemed to be the one that would benefit the most from a specialized in-house system.

I consider Grimm one of teh best implementations of D20 System to date (right up there with Spycraft). And i love the changes they've made to make it fit the genre better. But it really needed to go even further--and by the time they were done, it'd've been pretty much a new system, anyway, so why not just start from scratch and make whatever other changes they feel are necessary (frex, i could easily see a less-wild randomizer being a good fit)? So, while i think Grimm is an awesome D20 System game--and an excellent example of why the D20SRD/OGL is so cool (i get a bit sick of "concept" games that're 300pp in their own right)--i'm confident it'll be an even better non-D20 System game. The only question left in my mind is: "would i have bought the original version if i'd known there was a non-D20 System version on the horizon (no pun intended)?" I'm honestly not sure. I'm just not much of a fan of D20 System, but it really is a gem of a game.
