D&D 5E Group Think and the Wisdom of New Players

People throw around words like “worthless” and “useless”, but the difference between builds is actually quite small as long as you don’t dump your primary attribute (and some classes can even get away with that).

The only way to win D&D is to have fun. For some people that means cookie cutter builds, for others not so much.

I think most of the obvious candidates for classes matching your solicitation have been stated already.

I also think that any race-class combination is perfectly viable. In a game I ran just between me and my two nephews, their eyes lit up when they saw Dragonborn as a race option. Then at class selection, they chose rogue and wizard. I began explaining how ability scores and racial modifiers would play into their choices, and it didn't bother them. They both won D&D.

Feats? I've heard not so nice things said about Savage Attacker. It's statistically worse than Great Weapon Master in terms of raw DPR, but then you'll never have to groan when your -5 causes you to miss, so that's cool. I'd still sooner take ASIs for my attack stat before SA, though.
