Anyone local or even semi-local that could tell me if there are any worth checking out?

Will be there next weekend for a concert, & will probably spend a day shopping w/ my gf.

Anything resembling directions would be much appreciated also.

I'm temporarily in Norfolk, VA (6 months) and I've been doing a survey of local game/comic stores if you're interested... probably too far away though.

I went to Virginia Tech and graduated in 1996. There's a pretty good one on College Ave. in Blacksburg, not too far from Roanoke. The name escapes me.

I'm from Roanoke, and I even work at one of the game shops. I'll give you a rundown of everyone in the area who sells d20 related products (expect major bookstore chains, as I suspect that's not what you are looking for).

I'm terrible with directions, but I recommend Map Quest (www.mapquest.com)--I've used it before and it is generally pretty good. You'll need the addresses of the stores to use it, and I don't have time to look for them now because I have exams that I should be studying for, but I'll find them tomorrow evening if you're interested.

On to the stores:

X-Tremes
--They sell some WotC stuff and lots of Wiz Kids products. They also carry some Warhammer and Warhammer 40k
(address: 4358 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24014 - It's in Tanglewood Mall)

B&D Comics
--They sell mainly WotC stuff, but last time I checked there were a few other products as well from smaller publishers. About ½ of their game books were d20 related. Not too many books for sale there, but worth checking out if you want to see everything. They have really short hours, so get there mid day to be sure they are open.

Star City Games
--NO RPGs. Only card games and Wiz Kids stuff, but if that is what you are looking for, they probably have it.

Ground Zero
--sells a little bit of everything. Probably the best gaming store in Roanoke if you want the more unusual items. The store is really small and moves around a lot. That, plus their lack of a phone, makes them next to impossible to reach. Finally, they have really weird hours, so if you do manage to find it, it may not be open. And I'm NOT making this place up--it really does exist.

If you're willing to drive a bit more, about an hour or so outside of Roanoke are three other shops.

In Blacksburg, I know of two:

Beholder's Eye
-d20 (mainly WotC) and lots of Warhammer.

Fun and Games
-Most people say that Fun and Games is the better of the two. They carry d20 products as well as others. I have not been there in awhile so I'm not really sure what they have at the moment.

Finally, in Radford:

Game Quest
-This place has the best d20 selection that I've seen. I'm not sure how many books I've purchased there in the past year, but I'd estimate that it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8. They are closed on Sundays.

If you have more questions about Roanoke, I'll be happy to answer them. If you'd like addresses, post to let me know and I'll find them tomorrow (maybe even Ground Zero's...heh).

[shadowlight] I'm actually in southern WV and have been trying to do for the last two years what you are currently working on. So far I haven't found anything interesting, but if you would like to pass on what you find, I'd be more than interested.

[Katowice] We have to go through Blacksburg, so I'll check it out. Thank you.

[Zhao Yun] I wasn't expecting that many, but at least I have something to look forward to. Even very basic street addresses would be great if you have time. If not I understand (I've got finals in 2 weeks). If you are going to see Godsmack, please let me know & I'll try to hunt you down at the concert to thank you in person.

feate,

Hope your finals are going well. There's nothing like good 'ol finals to put a damper on the excitement of the last few weeks of school!

Here are the addresses that I promised:

X-tremes
4358 Electric Road
Roanoke Virginia 24014

Star City Games:
5623 Williamson Road
Roanoke Virginia

B&D Comic Shop
802 Elm Avenue
Roanoke Virginia

Ground Zero (I also saw the name listed as "This is Ground Zero")
1902 D Memorial Ave
Roanoke Virginia

Beholder's Eye:
700-A North Main St.
Blacksburg Virginia

Fun -N- Games:
420 North Main Street
Blacksburg Virginia

Game Quest:
1085 East Main Street
Radford Virginia

I was at X-Tremes today, and they had almost nothing new in, so as much as I hate to say it, it's probably not worth checking out if you want something unusual. Ground Zero is your best bet for a local shop with neat stuff, if they are open. Game Quest is also good if you want to stop in Radford (which is *very* near Blacksburg).

I'm not going to be at the concert, but I do hope you have fun. I'm stuck running a Hero Clix tournament at a girl's college this weekend :D
