[GT] Tool(s) help needed.

Been a while since I toyed with OO, but if it has strict macro security like Excel, it might have refused to open it. Like when you set Excel to only allow trusted macro code, it won't open unsafe excel files.

1) OO 1.1.4, guess I'll try the Beta and see how it works.

2) Wulf, because I've never met an Excel file OO couldn't handle, til yours. ;) And I wouldn't want a refund, but if I can't get it to work with 2.0 may I have permission to "gift" the files to a friend who has Excel?

In any case thanks for the idears, help, and offers.

Well, I grabbed the Creature Creation tool with the assumption that Excel is Excel. I have MacOS X, latest and greatest. I have Excel from Office X and the Office 2004 test drive (30 day full featured trial run).

I can open the file fine, after it gets done converting all the metafiles to a format usable on a Mac. Everything looks wonderful. I can click pull-down menus, and select every option. Cells that allow free typing of text is fine.

However, everyplace there are the tiny double arrows with which to select numbers, (like Creature Hit Dice, Land Speed, # Dice, etc. Everything with double arrow), nothing happens. Of course, double clicking the cells gives me a message that the file is protected and I can't alter it.

I've sent the file to my brother who has a PC to have him save it in various formats. Everyone he has sent back to me, so far, no change. The double arrows aren't clickable for me.

Any ideas?

There might be a mix of ActiveX and Excel controls. There are actually 2 distinct sets of control objects in Excel. One set uses ActiveX (on the Controls toobar), which is Windows native and has been known to have problems when translated to the Mac. The other set is off of the 'Forms' toolbar, and is native to Excel (for lack of a better term). The two are visually slightly different, but functionally are entirely different. The Forms controls have built-in functionality; the ActiveX controls require VB code to operate.

The Lifeforms spreadsheet is on my laptop at work. I'll check in the morning and see if I can tell one way or the other.

The error message I get when opening one of them is this:

Read Error.
The file is password protected.

Any chance of a protected openoffice.org version of the files? I do understand the need to protect your intellectual property, but would like to get the functionality out of the files.

Any help will be appreciated

Try opening it under Excel, removing password protection and saving. I'm not too familiar with the pitfalls of using OOo for Office files, but it seems to me this is simply an unimplemented feature. My theory is remove the feature, remove the problem.

This is why companies still tend to run MS Office...
